Bulletins - 2008 - 02/20/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Whitehurst promptly started the meeting.  Mary Dawe provided the invocation and Karen Bucey lead us in the pledge.  In honor of Jim Mulvaney, Mike lead us in singing Its a Grand Ole Flag.  Tom Sayer did another round of the Academic Rotathalon.  Is that really a word?  It was a lot of fun and its a great way to learn about the club.

SGT. AT ARMS

Jonathon Stone was out of town this week (for which he will surely pay a fine next week) so Paul Marsh filled in.  But, oops, Paul's wife went into labor early this morning so Jeramy Larson got pulled off the bench to come in to finish the ninth.  Jeramy was way too nice and did not fine anyone.  Brags though helped line the coffers.  Jeff Hogue reported that Peter Miller wants Jeff and his partner to write a weekly column for him.  Karny Stephan was highest bidder for the silk pashima.  We also auctioned off Southwest Airlines drink coupons.

GUESTS

Lots of guests today so we had a full house.  Welcome to all.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Karen Bucey and John Addams reported on a successful and fulfilling volunteer event at the USO on Presidents' Day.  Guest Roger McCauliff, a veteran, reminded us all that the USO receives no government monies yet provides much needed services to enlisted personnel and their spouses and families.
  • Wine Tasting event on February 29th, should be a lot of fun.  See website for more details.
  • Humane Society Telethon coming up on March 1st. Gary McElroy reminded us that there are a lot of somas that need homes (some of this, some of that).  Please support this event with either your time or a donation.
  • Women's Resource Fair is another event we like to assist with and more details regarding this upcoming event will be provided at future meetings.
  • With a very bad pun, Mel Gallegos reported on the recent P.E.T.S training.
  • Mel also reminded us to notify him if we had any ideas for matching grants.
  • Pat Cowett asked us to save the date for a social function.  On April 23rd we will be organizing a night at the opera to see Aida.
  • May 10th is our spring fundraiser.  Please commit to providing a donation for the silent auction and also invite guests to this event.  Karen Green noted that you are only young once but immature forever!
  • District Assembly is April 5th.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Sandra Schrift introduced this week's peacemaker series speaker.  Sharon Hukill is a Marriage and Family Therapist who specializes in healing the invisible wounds of soldiers, many of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome.  There are four major types of reactions including grief, avoidance, numbing, and arousal/hyper-vigilance.  Listening is the most important skill that anyone can provide.
