President Mike Whitehurst rang the bell promptly at 7:30am. Josephine (Josie) McCain gave the thought/invocation. Gary Green lead the pledge followed by the National Anthem by Mary Engles and all.
Brian Maienschien talked about his Candidacy for City Attorney. Serving as City Councilman, a graduate of both UC Santa Barbara and Western Law School, he feels that he is more than capable of doing the job…having passed Proposition 56 for the Preservation of Santa Squall Valley and assisting with fires in two districts: the Scripps Ranch Fire, the Cedar Fires and the Rancho Bernardo Fire. Brian is also a member of the Rancho Bernardo Rotary.
Peter McGuire introduced a number of guests and visiting Rotarians, including Brian Maienschien, Mac McLaughlin from the USS Midway, Dr. Richard Schwarzebach visiting form Germany and Ian Kay visiting from England.
Larry Nuffer introduced Jim McLaughlin and several members of the USS Midway Museum to present a flight jacket and admiral’s cap to Maureen Eberle on-behalf of Ron Erbetta who is not doing too well right now. Jim McLaughlin said that it was Ron who coined the name “No Child Left Ashore” for their launch of the Math and Science Program onboard the ship.
Student of the month is Luis Villa Senor from San Diego High School, the School of Communications with a fine academic standing.
Carol Jensen and Karen Green talked about the Fundraiser on May 10th, Sign-up and donations needed.

Maureen Eberle announced being in-charge of the In-bound Scholars and is looking for host sponsors.

April 26th is Rotarians at Work day and the team will be painting at The Veteran’s Village from 8am-noon.

Lynn Hamilton introduced Dr. Adam Dorin, who spoke on his book entitled Jihad and American Medicine: Thinking Like a Terrorist to Anticipate Attacks via Our Health System. Dr. Dorin was born in New York City, a few blocks from the World Trade Center. Adam grew up in Washington, DC and attended the University of Maryland, graduating from the School of Medicine and performing his residency at John Hopkins in Anesthesia and Critical Medical Care. Also an Officer in the Naval reserve, he joined the Navy in 1990. Currently serving as the Medical Director at Sharp Grossmont Center, he wrote a book concerned about the vulnerabilities in American Medicine , medical errors and the lack of safety and security in healthcare today. He said that medical errors and counterfeit medicines are the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. He also said that healthcare serial killers are increasing and that are eight types of medical killers. Terrorists realize that the sale of counterfeit medicine is a way of making a lot of money and to kill in the Western world. Dr. Dorin said that Homeland Security and technology are looking for better ways to safeguard the purity of our products and drug packaging. He said that there is a lack of a clear mandate and Congress is also trying to take measures.
