Week's Bulletin Was Written
By Jenny Goodman
Missed the first few minutes of the meeting as I didn't expect to be writing the bulletin this week so didn't catch the opening of the meeting, sorry.
In keeping with our recent series of speakers, Amy Lepine joined us to give us a quick spiel for her city attorney candidacy. Amy believes that the City Council members running for city attorney have debilitating conflicts and should not be city attorney for that reason. Jan Goldsmith is too much of the republican old guard which is who lead us into the pension mess in the first place when we underfunded the pension to finance the Republican National Convention. Amy made a quick and empassioned presentation and thanked us for our time.
Several people paid fines to brag about their families. Tom Sayer's son is in the academic state finals. Dan Cleaves was thankful for making it through another tax season. Larry Nuffer reported on his father's healing broken hip. Rosalie Kramm celebrated her over-50 men's soccer team's first victory. Mike Lewis is hosting an ambassadorial scholar in August and also announced a new film "Gashole" opening on May 9th for which he will have limited tickets for sale on behalf of the Environmental Coalition.
We had many guests today and wished them all a warm welcome.
Karen Bucey completed her requirements for blue badgedom and was rewarded with the presentation of her blue badge. Karen is very happy being a Rotarian in our club.
Maureen Eberle and John Addams made a special financial presentation to Sharon Lawrence on behalf of Voices for Children. Sharon shared a few success stories from her organization so that we could appreciate what our money helps to fund.
Saturday, April 26th is Rotarians at Work day.
-
May 2nd will be a 1000 smiles trip to Ensenada.
-
In two weeks, we will have Vocational Services Day so sign up for one of the four locations. Remember, on that day, May 7th, there will not be a meeting at the University Club.
-
Opera tickets will be left at will call for all those attending AIDA.
George Mullen introduced this week's speaker, Rachel Teagle, the Exec. Dir. of the new Children's Museum. Despite nursing a bad cold, Ms. Teagle made a very nice presentation. The Children's Museum will open May 4th after being closed for six years. Our club will be hosting the first event at the facility. Lots of effort went into making the building as green as possible. The goal of the museum is to get arts back into the schools and be a good community center. They are especially trying to reach the teen audience who are often left out and a huge gap in exposure to the arts exist. The museum features numerous hands on studios and art exhibits. They have asked artists to use recycled materials. The museum has 18 committed board members. They are trying several innovative programs such as partnering with Washington Elementary to allow the students to spend a school day at the facility and they have an aggressive camp schedule. They intend to offer many opportunities for disadvantaged families to have access to the facility and every family membership helps underwrite these opportunities.
