Bulletins - 2008 - 05/21/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

After President Mike Whitehurst rang the bell to start the meeting, Pete McGuire provided a nice invocation on victory and defeats and how they both can lead to learning experiences.  Sheila Hardin lead the pledge of allegiance.  And without our regular song leaders, we attempted a verse of Its a Grand Ole Flag.

SGT. AT ARMS

Jane Barry "bid" $50 for a bottle of wine and Frank DeFransesco won our lottery drawing.  A Rotaract Officer peddled Ace of Hearts tickets.  Martin Blair celebrated being in the restaurant business for 25  years.  Sandra Schrift and Pat Cowett announced they are going to Ecuador.

GUESTS

We had lots of guests today and several prospective members.  We had visiting Rotarians from Germany and Belgium.  One notable guest was Rotarian Floyd Morrow, who is the democratic nominee for Mayor.  Floyd reminded us that there were only 14 shopping days left (and 100 plus commericals from Steve Francis) until election day.  Floyd, although not waging a high profile campaign, is endorsed by most democratic organizations.  He is a former city council member, former deputy city attorney, and a former president of the Mission Valley Rotary group.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Susan Bleicher reminded us that membership is important and she will be taking over the membership committee since Jeff Christie resigned.
  • The Club will be participating in a Padres Day on June 22nd, a Sunday.  The tickets are $40 each and are in the shade. The Padres are celebrating a Children's Clinic on that day and the International Committee is timing its donation to take advantage of John Moore's matching gift program.
  • Bobbi Spinner-Flack announced the diaper drive is not doing too well and implored everyone to bring in diapers for Father Joe's diaper drive.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Dan Duncan received his blue badge today.  Dan has quickly become involved in many of the club's activities and has earned his badge is just a short time.  Way to go, Dan.  Keep up the good work.

Mel Gallegos presented Jonathon Stone with two more Paul Harris Fellowships.  Jeff Hogue donated one of the fellowships in Jonathon's honor to thank him for work that Jonathon sent his way.  Caroline Chen also received another Paul Harris Fellowship.  Mel reminded us all that 35,000 children die every day from preventable causes and that the money we donate for Paul Harris Fellowships go directly to programs that help alleviate this terrible statistic.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

This week's speaker was Christopher Yanov of Reality Changers.  Mr. Yanov gave us an impassioned presentation on his program which helps get kids out of gangs and helps them become productive members of society.  The program does not preach prevention but rather gives the kids positive alternatives to gang life.  Education is a bullet proof award and the program provides scholarships to families of victims of gang violence.  Mr. Yanov has attended the funerals of six teenagers killed due to gang violence and he doesn't want to attend anymore.  Using the words of a brave young lady whose brother was killed by gang violence-Go Do Something With Your Life!
