THIS WEEK’S MEETING

This week’s invocation was delivered by Melissa Blackburn-Joniaux. Ajay Gupta led our pledge of allegiance. And, we were raised in song by Linda Jalving, Jim Mulvaney, and Mary Engles. The selected song was the Star Spangled Banner.

Rotary Flags were presented from Maureen Eberle (Miraflores, Bolivia) and Mary Engles (Bologna, Italy).

GUESTS

Visiting Rotarians included John Kirkwood of Jinja, Hey-Jude Gallegos of Poway, Dan Gensler of Coronado, Carl Lower of LJGT, and Jere With of Club 33.  Guests included Jack Ochola of Jinja, Darrick Hwang and Amanda Scott of Rotaract, Amanda Huynh of Cardiff guest of Jim Mulvaney, Sara Pagano of the USO, and Mana Mahfoozi guest of Jim Lauth.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Mike highlighted the steps required to attain a Blue Badge. He emphasized the importance of attending a district event and a monthly board meeting. Upcoming district events include the Matching Grant Seminar this Saturday, June 7, and District Council Dinner on June 24th. Our monthly board meetings occur the second Monday of each month. For June, the board meeting is this upcoming Monday, June 9th. This is President Mike’s last board meeting and he will be accompanied by incoming president, Mel Gallegos.

  • Other upcoming events include Rotary Night, Tuesday June 10th at the Padres vs Dodgers. This event was introduced by Assistant Governor Carl Lower and the incoming Assistant Governor, Dan.

  • President Mike also encouraged members to make the short drive to LA for the Rotary International Convention, June 15-18. Registration is available on-site.

  • We received an update on the successful Rotaract fundraiser. Amanda Scott announced they were able to raise $7,000 for “All About the Kids.”

  • President Mike announced that June is Rotary Fellowship Month. Visit http://www.rotary.org/EN/SERVICEANDFELLOWSHIP/FELLOWSHIP/Pages/ridefault.aspx for more information.

  • To conclude President Mike’s focus on Blue Badge requirements, congratulations to Sheila Hardin for completing all the requirements to trade in her red badge for Rotary blue.
  • Don’t forget to bring in diapers for the children at Father Joe’s. Bobbi Spinner-Flack will take cash and do the shopping for those shy about carrying diapers!

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

A one thousand dollar donation was presented to the USO. Sara Pagano, PR Director, of the USO accepted the check and shared the importance of all donations. The San Diego USO is one of the few in the country with two locations. They are the “home away from home” and they undergoing a remodel and technology upgrade. They are the only USO in the US with the Tuesday Night Dinner event. Volunteers welcome!

June 2008 Students of the MonthHeather Xitco introduced our two RYLA participates. (www.rotaryryla.com) San Diego High students Nadine and Marisol were accompanied by their teacher and advisor Tom Valley. Both students spoke highly of their experiences and described it as inspirational and unlike anything they have done before. They are thankful for the experience.


 

 

 

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

John KirkwoodOur guest speaker this week was fellow Rotarian, John Kirkwood, of Jinja, Uganda. Rotary International District 9200 (www.rotary9200.org) has about 120 clubs with the majority count of 57 in Uganda. Uganda, described as “the pearl of Africa” by Churchill, has a population of 29 million. Fifty percent of the population is under 15.5 years old with an average life expectancy of 43 years. John’s presentation focused on the matching grants that help Uganda. The projects spanned from protected water sources to educational endeavors for textbooks and science labs.
