Bulletins - 2008 - 08/13/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Pat Cowett provided the invocation this morning and Jay Sener lead the flag salute and pledge.  We garbled our way through another version of "You are my sunshine" to pay tribute to our beautiful San Diego weather.

SGT. AT ARMS

Jonathan Stone won the 50/50 which is only appropriate given the great fundraising  he did as our immediate past Sgt. at Arms.  Mike Lewis got busted for being on the front page of the local newspaper.  Gary Green celebrated the birth of another grandchild.  Heather Xitco gave us a progress report on her house that she is building and gave a shout out to Melissa Chapman for helping find the right furniture pieces.  Alex Kwoka's daughter got married and mom was quite proud.

GUESTS

Various guests and visiting Rotarians including exchange students.  Welcome all.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Rotary Baseball coming up soon.  Enroll on District website.
  • Public Relations seminar on Saturday.  Check with Mel Gallegos.

  • Claire Maytum reported on a not-so-boring District Event she recently attended.  She picked it because it included dinner.   She has now fulfilled her Blue Badge requirements.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

YMCA PresentationJohn Addams, on behalf of the Youth Services Committee presented the Downtown YMCA with a $1,000 check to further their efforts to provide career mentoring, literacy and youth outreach.   Dan Duncan, the Exec. THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Karney Stefan introduced Karen Haines, President of Cal State-San Marcos.  She is in her fifth year and has spearheaded and witnessed incredible growth at the campus during her tenure.  The campus started as an off-shoot of SDSU and became free-standing in 1989.  SDSU is largest university in CSU system and presents a challenge by overshadowing CS-San Marcos.   Student population has grown 23% in last three years and now has an alumni base of 20,000.  The campus serves the San Diego, Orange, and Riverside counties.  The most popular programs are business and teacher certification.  While the school has capacity for more students, budgets limit enrollment.  The campus is beautiful and modern.  Soon they will launch their own off-shoot campus in Temecula. Karen Haines

She outlined the top tens reasons why Rotary should support the school.

1.  Kiwanis already does.

2.  The school consistently receives community service awards.

3.  Business and Non-Profit focus on partnerships.

4.  Masters degree program in History with a focus on media and technology.

5.  We are a green campus with a national trophy to prove it for the last three years.

6.  Foster youth participation program to help foster students succeed in college.

7.  Military, veterans and active duty programs.

8.  Significant Coastal research center.

9.  Teaching hands on citizenship and civic responsibility.

10.  Good neighbors and partners in business, community and neighborhood.
