Bulletins - 2008 - 09/03/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman, Esq.

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The Best Rotary Club in the District began promptly at 7:30 a.m.   Gary Green provided the morning's invocation and President Mel Gallegos lead us in the pledge after a short lecture on patriotism.  In that spirit, we sang a rousing rendition of "The Grand Ole Flag".

SGT. AT ARMS

Scott Carr won the progressive raffle and opted for the cash.  Tom Sayer won a gift certificate and also thanked Paul Marsh for his chiropractic services.  Jim Mulvaney bragged about his son who is appearing in High School Musical.  Chris Carstens reported his preemie grandbaby is doing well at six months.  Mary Engles bragged on Susan Bleicher for a 112 mile bike ride she went on.  And Martin Blair reported that the unplanned remodel of his restaurant would be done within 60 days.  In the interim, he is doing Thirsty Thursdays, just serving wine and beer, to help benefit his staff.

GUESTS

Many guests joined us this morning including Chris Jacobs, a jeweler and former founding member who is looking to rejoin the club.  Dave McKee's wife Peggy also joined us as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • President Mel thanked Jim Mulvaney for his continued successful efforts in our membership recruiting and for being one of our song-meisters.  He presented Jim with a Rotary pin.
  • Mike Whitehurst talked about the upcoming Foundation Seminar and passed the Polio Pig around for a weekly feeding.
  • Claire Maytum reported on a volunteer opportunity at the Ronald McDonald house for next Thursday where we would be providing dinner.
  • Everyone was reminded to go onto the website and update their information on their personal bios.
  • Jonathon Stone and Dave Ferguson announced they still need golfers for the Holes for Heroes tournament coming up.
  • Rotaract is selling Entertainment Books.
  • President Mel read a nice letter from the wife of a wounded warrior thanking us for the backpacks we sponsored.
  • Gary Green reported on Stand Down and passed a group photo around.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Jeramy Larson inducted two new members into our club.  Marti Hess is an Executive Director and enjoys gardening, golfing and has three daughters.  She is very excited to join our club and promises to be an enthusiastic member.  Pauline Lynn, originally from Panang, lives in Point Loma and has a finance degree and Masters from SDSU.  She is now in real estate with Prudential.  She is world traveled and is excited about being involved in micro credit programs.  Welcome to both of these new members.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Dan Gensler, Assistant District Governor, was our guest speaker today.  He talked about how Rotary is such a big part of his life.  He is originally from Wisconsin and recently became an empty nester.  Told a very funny story of his bike ride with Jude Gallegos when they were working together on a project across the border.  Dan spoke about the importance of the Rotary Foundation which is the "doing arm" of Rotary International.  Globally the foundation provides 100 million in actual funds to projects around the world each year.  Need is so deep though that this amount is just a drop in the bucket but still helps significantly.  We cannot fix everything but we can still make a difference by saving just one life.
