This week's meeting started with Mel calling the group to order. Chris Jacobs provided an invocation titled "Life's Splendor," while Paul Marsh led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Linda Jalving and Mary Engles led us in an sing-a-long a cappella that was both painful and amusing at the same time.
We had many guests today, including Mary Ryans, Tim O'Malley, Peter Marsh, and Carolyn Olson (wife of member Jeff Olson). Kristin Thomas, Jessica Sachiria and Renata Kilby joined us from the San Diego Downtown Rotaract Club. Visiting Rotarians included District 5340's Assistant District Governor David Ballestreros, and Lynn Petroski and Karen Richmond from the Rotary Club of Watertown, New York. David Gallestros joined from the La Mesa Sunrise Club, and Francis Dykmans can from the Rotary Club of La Puntilla (Ecuador).

Sanda Schrift returned from Ecuador. This was part of a District trip with 11 clubs. Francis Dikeman and David Ballestreros were formally introduced. Francis' club has 36 members, and is very involved in water distribution and a children's burn center. His club also helped build an opthamalogical center, and is raising funds for foster children. The project in Ecuador had 300 Rotarians from around the world. District 5340 put $150,000 into the project, and was one of the largest contingencies.
Paul Marsh held his weekly raffle with Maureen Eberle winning $84. NICE! New member Jeff Olson was interviewed by the local media, while Joe Ciokin was interviewed by the San Diego Union-Tribune for a front page story on the 25th anniversary of the U.S. evacuation of Beirut, Lebanon. Jerri Malana was nomination for the Women Who Mean Business award. Jeramy Larsen recognized Jonathan Stone's amazing work on the Holes for Heroes tournament.
Chris Carstens introduced Dr. Mary Lyons, President of the University of San Diego. Dr Lyons, who is a member of Club 33, talked about the university and its contributions to the community. This year is the 60th anniversary of USD's charter. Since its founding, the institution has had a major impact on the local region. The University was started by Bishop Francis Buddy, who had the vision for a school for Catholic children. The institution then teamed up with the Society of the Sacred Heart. Its focus was on providing the best education, and investing in the local community. Today, the University has 4500 undergraduates, 45% of whom are in the USD business program. Dr. Alan Gin is a leading economic forecaster, and one of the most recognizable members of the business faculty. In addition, the University's Burnham Moores Institute helps professionals in real estate. USD is unique in that many of its students graduate with an international perspective. The School of Law continues to also make strides in the region, with a full 1/3 of the bench and bar made up of alumni. USD School of Law is ranked 23rd for the number of citations for legal scholars, and is planning on launching a Center for Intellectual Property Law. The school's Center for Public Interest Law is also incredibly active.
