Bulletins - 2008 - 12/03/2008

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Jenny K. Goodman, Esq.

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

Pauline Lim-Endresen started our meeting with a reading of Mother Theresa's morning prayer for peace.  Scott Carr lead the Pledge of Allegiance and our song-meisters Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving got us in the holiday spirit with Jingle Bells.

SGT. AT ARMS

Mary Engles won the 50/50 raffle.  Pat Cowett ratted out Jerilyn Malano for being the first Asian-american president of the San Diego County Bar Association.  Pat Cowett also paid a fine to promote her Auxiliary Unit's fundraising opportunities.  Martin Blair announced he is back in business after his unscheduled remodel.  Reid Marchand paid a fine for being interviewed at the Mother Goose Parade after being outed by Mary Engles.

GUESTS

It was a very full house this morning with lots of guests including Monarch school representatives.  Several potential new members were also in attendance.  Assistant District Governor Dan Ginser joined us along with several Coronado and Camp Pendleton Rotarians.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Jeff Olsen reminded everyone to bring their contributions for the Responsibility X-mas Project.
  • Elaine from Monarch School thanked our club for the help in getting the embroidery program started.
  • Lynn Hamilton mentioned that she was gathering Toys for Santa contributions and encouraged those who wanted to help bring an unwrapped toy next week.
  • Pat Moore, a former member, made a fantastic $880 donation!
  • Susan Bleicher reminded everyone that if you wanted to go to the opera to let her know as she would be getting the tickets this week.
  • Judy Bambace presented the Student of the Quarter award to Chelsea Murphy.  Chelsea claims she is the younger sister of the smart kid in her family.  She is a Monarch School high-flyer which requires a minimum 3.0 GPA.  We also presented Joe Garcia, the vice-principal, with a $1,500 for the school.
  • Sandra Schrift announced that she was now accepting nominations for the Peace Maker award.
  • Maureen Eberle reminded us to sign up for the Foundation Gala as it will be an amazing event.
  • Heather Xitco requested volunteers to help with the RYLA program.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS

Mana Mahfoozi and Judy Bambace each received special recognition for their work as Red Badgers.  Jeramy Larson and Susan Bleicher inducted new member Tonya ????? into our club.  Tonya is a native Californian and a charter member and former president of the Camp Pendleton.  She teaches engineering logistics for the Navy and was really attracted to the friendliness of our club.  We anticipate she will be a very active member.  Welcome aboard.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Karny Stefan introduced Major Linda Markowitz of the Salvation Army.  Major Markowitz gave us a summary of all the Salvation Army's work including their annual Christmas efforts and disaster relief efforts.  The Army is an evangelical part of the Christian Church and is active in 115 countries.  Soup, soap and salvation is their motto.  The Christmas Kettle originated after the San Francisco earthquake.  The proceeds of the kettles are used for purchasing Christmas gifts and food baskets for local families so that 80% of the money stays in our community.

The Army requires extensive training for their workers with a code of conduct.  The Army is a dry organization since many of their clients struggle with alcohol problems.  Homeless outreach is an important aspect of their work.  Red Cross, FEMA and Salvation Army are the three main relief organizations in the world.
