THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The Meeting Was Called to Order by Pres. Lynn Hamilton. Bobbi Spinner -Flack led the Pledge of Allegiance. Melissa True lead our invocation, focusing on the blessings in our lives. Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving lead an appropriately rousing rendition of Take Me out to the Ballgame.

GUESTS

Guests included Kristin Thomas, representing the San Diego downtown Rotaract. Mike Lewis was the guest of Heather Xitco, Stephanie Barnier was the guest of Alex Kwoka, and Lee Skillman was introduced by Sandy Rugg .  Steve Waterman introduced his guest, Elizabeth Jones, and Melissa True brought a guest, Ron Morabito.  Visiting Rotarians included Jack Harkins from the Miramar club, and Maryanne Ericssen, from the Tahoe Incline club in Nevada.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The University club is in the midst of a renovation. Our alternate site will be the Sheraton where we will meet for one meeting in August and all of September.
  • Judy Bambace announced that the Student of the Month program had awarded scholarships to Monica Sedano, who will be attending Grossmont College, and Edgar Millan, who will be attending San Diego State University. Larry Nuffer will be taking that program over this year.
  • Susan Bleicher announced that the District Council meeting is this Saturday, with a meeting scheduled from 530 to 7 which will be followed by a concert by the San Diego Youth Symphony. Members are urged to attend both events.
  • Alex Kwoka announced that there will be an International Services Committee meeting on August 10, from 530 to 7.
  • Wendy Patrick shared happiness that on August 11, club members will be have the opportunity to attend the Padres game. Anyone who wants to can meet before the game at El Vitral , starting at 5:30 PM.
  • Steve Waterman, a member of our club, is also on the board of the Foundation for the Children of the California's, and organization which provides medical care for children in Tijuana. The hospital is adding a surgical facility. Becky Jones, the founder of the Foundation, was on hand to receive a check for $1500 from the club which will support the construction of the new surgical center. She explained that this will be the only freestanding surgical Center for children in the country of Mexico. The program is also aligned with Rady Children’s Hospital and the Shriners.
  • James Mulvaney received a special pen from President Clinton because of his sponsorship of so many new members in the past year.
  • Dave Ferguson announced that they have begun soliciting support for this year's Holes for Heroes golf tournament. Our guest and speaker, Jerry Coleman, made a generous kickoff donation of tickets to a Padres game in his personal box, dinner, and a chance to go on the field before that evening's game. Take me out to the ballgame indeed!
  • William Meade received his blue badge. Congratulations are in order.
  • Gary McElroy introduced our RYLA graduates and presented their awards. Stephanie Ryan, Kally Temesgen and Rosemary Kloh, San Diego High  Students were congratulated by the club and expressed their appreciation for the experience of attending the RYLA program, which was described as a truly life-changing experience.


SGT. AT ARMS

Steve Wells, club Sergeant-At-Arms, pulled Jim Mulvaney's ticket for the lottery. No one suspected a fix. Dave Micki was fined because of celebrating his 42nd anniversary. The Polio Pigs were supported by the auction of two bottles of wine. The ladies paid $50 for theirs. The gentleman followed with a successful $100 bid. Congratulations to both bidders.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Leah Swearingen introduced this week's speaker, a true San Diego landmark. Jerry Coleman, a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean War, 1949 Rookie of the Year with the New York Yankees, later an All-Star and most valuable player in the World Series. Jerry is the longtime voice of Padres baseball, and a hall of fame broadcaster. He entertained the club with stories of Padres past and present, and commented that Bud Black is "the brightest man I ever knew who was managing a baseball team." He added that Jeff Morad is a great promoter and, "doing a whale of a job." He delighted the membership with stories of life with the Yankees, his memories of Buzzy Bavasi and the prospects for Padres starting pitching. It was a wonderful morning
