Bulletins - 2010 - 08/18/2010

This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Tom Sayer

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Lynn Hamilton opened the meeting, wishing us all a Good Rotary Morning!!  Paul Marsh led the pledge and Chris Carstens read this poem that he authored:

Invocation – A Original Poem By Chris Carstens

Sometimes people ask why I’m so happy

I wake up knowing

God will hide a blessing

in this day,

some treasure, small or large, that maybe only I can find.

It will be my present, like a birthday gift,

but better,

a token of Eternity that He has placed in time,

Right there where I can see it – if I look.

I’m hunting for it now.

That’s what I do – its my vocation,

Seeking out the markers God has set upon my way.

Linda Jalving led us all in singing “You are my Sunshine.”

GUESTS

We had a smattering of our usual guests and visiting Rotarians, including Trina Hester (prospective new member) and Teresa Kim (Ambassadorial Scholar).

SGT. AT ARMS

Steve Wells hit a few of us for some recent accomplishments – Tom Larimar will be serving a jail sentence to raise money for MDA.  Scott Carr was seen in a grass skirt accepting a Community Service Award for the SD Volunteer Lawyers Program (ok, I might have combined two events here).  Wendy Patrick was honored as one of the Top Lawyers in San Diego.  Mike Lewis will be heading to China and will be staying with some Ambassadorial Scholars.  Leah Swearingen is now on Jerry Coleman’s A-list.  Gary Green thanked the Club for so far meeting $11,000 of his $12,500 goal for hole sponsors for the Holes for Heroes Tournament this year.  Just 3-5 more sponsors to go!!  Chris Jacobs won the raffle for the “Deluxe Package” consisting of a hotel stay at the Omni (and NOT Gary Green, as he claims to have been once referred to in his college days…)  Congrats to all!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Welcome back to Melissa Blackburn!!

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

This week’s speaker was Rob Hutsel of the San Diego River Park Foundation. The SDRPF is dedicated to creating a river-long system of parks, open spaces, and community places which celebrate the River's unique natural and cultural legacy and enhance our quality of life.  They are also working to bring people together for a healthy river with its RiverWatch, River Ambassador, and Clean and Green Team volunteer programs.  The 52-mile long San Diego River originates near Santa Ysabel in East San Diego County and runs down to the El Capitan Reservoir, and then through Lakeside, Santee, and Mission Valley. The River drains into the Pacific Ocean at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach.  For more information visit http://www.sandiegoriver.org/
