Our meeting this week was held at the Mingei International Museum. Mingei, which is translated from its Japanese origin to mean “everybody’s art”, derives its style from the discovery of art within ordinary objects.
The meeting was called to order by President Lynne, as Jonathan Stone led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Chris Carstens provided our invocation.
Guests included Stacy Rubin, Trina Hester, Katie Price and Chamian Coates. Our visiting Rotarian was Bob Coates from the Mission Valley Rotary, who brought a distant relative, Chamian, as a guest.

Scott Carr did a stellar job filling in for Steve as Sergeant at Arms, and it was déjà vu. Mary Dawe donated tickets to the Padres, Del Mar racetrack and hotel accommodations for auction, and Jonathan Stone was the successful bidder. Steve Laub was the beneficiary of a Rotary brag, for the outstanding job that he has accomplished, in a very short time, with the Club Services organization. Lucy Kilea received a rousing chorus of “happy Birthday” form the club’s “choir”.
Marueen Eberle made an appeal for hosting of a UCSD medical student, beginning October 17 through mid-December. Roger is a former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and in the Rotary spirit, is not too proud to sleep on your floor if necessary. Maureen will also be hosting Roger, but has some “down time’ anticipated during the period needed. Please contact Maureen at (619) 519-5281 to help.
HOLES FOR HEROES: Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Admiral baker Golf Course , 10:30 am registration. Sigh up for the dinner ($60), or to donate silent auction items, as there will be 17 wounded heroes on hand for the event. There is room for only 8 more golfers, so don’t wait. This is an incredibly worthy cause, so be there or be nowhere.
Program Committee Co-Chair Mary Dawe delivered in a big way on this one, as we were hosted by Rob Sidner, who is in his 17th year as director of the Mingei International Musuem. Rob’s background includes a career as a Roman Catholic priest, and his art interest began with many visits to the Toledo and Cleveland Museums of Art, and taken to the next level during his 4 years living in Europe- including Rome, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sacred Theology. He later earned a master’s Degree in Liturgy form Notre Dame. Rob subsequently chaired the Art and Architecture Committee of the Toledo Diocese.

The museum currently features a 1 year “Viva Mexico” - Heroes and Artisans exhibit, which ends on January 2, 2011. Upstairs, we were treated to a guided tour of the Sonabai exhibit (“another way of seeing”) which was inspired by Sonabai Rajawar’s 15 year isolation as a young bride in India.
