President Lynn Hamilton called the meeting to order at 7:22. Michel
Goldstein led the Pledge of Allegiance and Howard Wayne gave the invocation,
entitled "The Clock of Life" ("The clock of life is wound but once; the present
only is our own"). The song was postponed until later in the program.
Nancy Vaughn served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the High School Speech
Contest.

She explained the rules and that the speech subject was the 4-Way
Test of Rotary. She introduced her distinguished panel of judges, all of whom
were in uniform: California Highway Patrol Officer Art Atkins, San Diego
Sheriff's Lieutenant Andrea Arreola, Coast Guard Officer Alex Carrillo, USO
Sergeant-Major Bobby Woods (also USMC, ret.) and Navy Chief Hospitalman Austin
Ivy.
The student contestants were introduced and each spoke anonymously. Student A (Ariana
Yanez), sponsored by the Encinitas Rotary Club, spoke on depression. Student B
(Ryan Burks), sponsored by the Ramona Rotary Club, gave a speech entitled "No
Substitute for Victory." Student C (Holly Maas), sponsored by the La Mesa
Rotary Club, talked about the struggles of immigrants. Student D (Katie
Wrieden), sponsored by the La Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club, declaimed on asylum for
female rape victims. Student E (Meg Patten), sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo
Sunrise Rotary Club, praised Title IX for its impact on women's sports. Student
F (Dylan Dawkins), sponsored by the Fallbrook Village Rotary Club, spoke on
poverty and described his mission to Chiapas, Mexico.

The students were supported by friends, family and sponsoring Rotary Clubs:
Encinitas Rotarian Kerry Witkin and friend Angelica Garcia were present for
Ariana Yanez; Ramona Rotarian Joan Renaud was there for Ryan Burks; parents Jeff
and Audrey Maas, and La Mesa Rotarian Bill Ashman came out for Holly Maas; La
Mesa Sunrise Rotarians Janet Castanos and Carol Katela were there for Katie
Wrieden; mother Angie Patten, Ranch Sunrise Rotarians Rex Teets, Paul Gorman and
Phil Schneider, and friend Nani Staab attended for Meg Patten; and parents
Donald and Yvonne Dawkins, their daughter, and Fallbrook Village Rotarian Don
Weeks supported Dylan Dawkins.
Then, the meeting continued as the judges conferred.
Steve Laub introduced visiting Rotarians Stuart Williams (San Francisco -
Chinatown) and Lisa Miller (Downtown Club 33). The following non-Rotarian
guests were announced: Teri Chase, guest of Judy Bombace, Shelley Callahan,
guest of Tom Larimer, Anna Lu, guest of Pauline Lim, Cynthia Sener, guest of
President Lynn Hamilton, Gary Neiger, guest of Chris Carstens, and Jason
Silberman, who has applied for membership in the Club, guest of Sandee
Rugg.
Jim Mulvaney led the Club in singing "God Bless America."
William Meade gave up $10 in honor of his third wedding
anniversary, and Mike Lewis paid $5 to make known his business had received a
$1.8 million grant for biofuels research.
The speech contest winners were announced: 3rd Place Ryan Burks, 2nd
Place Dylan Dawkins, and 1st Place Katie Wrieden. All will go on to compete at the
District level.
