President Lynn Hamilton brought the meeting to order promptly at 7:30 and enlisted the services of Tanisha, one of our RYLA student participants, for the Pledge of Allegiance. Scot Carr provided a Hawaiian invocation in keeping with our upcoming fundraiser of the same theme followed by a stirring rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" sung as a round led by Linda Jalving and Mary Engles.
Steve Wells, rumored to be vacationing in Cabo, duties as Sgt at Arms were completed by Frank DeFrancesco. In addition to performing the duties assigned Frank also made a donation of home-grown vegetables for sale to the members. Linda Jalving’s birthday was celebrated as was Mel Gallego’s 30th anniversary at Sharp Hospital. Leah Swearington celebrated her 20 year anniversary in Rotary by making another Paul Harris Fellowship contribution and Tom Sayers contributed in celebration of his son Andrew’s many awards as an outstanding Lacrosse player for his school including MVP, All American, etc.
Steve Laub introduced several local visiting Rotarians and two prospective new members. Gary McElroy introduced and presented awards to the five students that participated in this year’s RYLA program (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) and their principal Joe Austin.

- Lynn Hamilton announced that the SDDBR was one of only 13 clubs to receive a Presidential Citation with Distinction presented at the Governors Award Banquet last Tuesday, June 7th.
- Lynn Hamilton announced the next SDDBR board meeting was scheduled to follow the membership meeting and a name change for the club was on the agenda for those interested.
- Clare announced that the Rotary Blood Drive was a success with 29 donors participating.
- Kelly Berner congratulated the Club for the overall participation in gathering auction items for the upcoming “Catch the Aloha Spirit” fundraiser. The 2011 goal of $50 K in donations was exceeded by $9,446! Special thanks went to the Mai Tai Maniacs led by Linda Jalving and the Naneki Lii team led by Nancy Vaughan for placing first and second in the item gathering effort. Congratulations went out to all who donated items for the auction!
- Mark your calendars for our Demotion Party on Monday, June 27. We will be dark that week, and more details and sign-up sheet will be coming.
Jenny Goodman, Chair for the upcoming “Catch the Aloha Spirit” fundraiser this Saturday June 11th at the Bali Hai resort, announced that this year’s auction has an online element not present in previous auction fundraisers. The online website is: http://www/charityauctionstoday,com/store/SDDTBR/ and it will be up until June 25th. All members, friends, family and prospective attendees are encouraged to go online and register! This year’s party will begin at 6:00 pm with a hosted bar until 7:30 pm, a buffet dinner at 7:30 and live auction from 8:00 pm to 8:30 pm followed by dancing. Sharon Sava will be taking photos of the festivities.
Our featured speaker was Howard Barnhorst, a founding member of our club. Mr. Barnhorst has been an attorney for over 35 years and sits on the boards of San Diego Hospice and San Diego Palliative Care. His subject was “Some Things that Intrigue Me”. As the title implies, his talk covered a diverse range of topics, including the website TED.com (Technology, Education, and Design), the randomness of life and how we all came to be here, traits you admire in your friends (which probably don’t include how well they did in high school) and ended with the thought that when given a choice between being right and being kind, always choose to be kind! It was truly a delightful and thought provoking presentation!
