THIS WEEK'S GUEST SPEAKER
Former architect and current County Supervisor Ron Roberts was our special guest and speaker. Mr. Roberts, known for his fiscal discipline, spoke about the history of the historic County Administration building and plans for the upgrade and utilization of its campus. Following are some highlights from his presentation:
- San Diego County is doing well; has AAA credit rating and functioning within its budget
- It continues to provide services and anticipates no layoffs of employees
- New women’s prison is being built in Santee
- County Administration building was built in 1938 with a grant from the Federal Government in the amount of $1.5M
- The county and city shared this building until the late ‘50’s when the city moved out
- In 1996 Roberts introduced an agenda item to create the CAC Waterfront Park
- Plans for the CAC Waterfront Park are now moving forward
- The CAC campus has 60 acres of land above ground
- The development will be environmentally sensitive and LEEDS certified
- The new park (scheduled to open in the winter of 2014) will support major public events seating 2,900 people on the south park and 3,900 people on the north park
- An underground parking structure will be built to accommodate 250 vehicles
- An above ground parking structure to accommodate 700 cars will be built on Pacific Coast Highway between Cedar and Kettner. This will be open to the public 24/7.
- There will be areas for small groups as well
- The waterfront from Seaport Village to Laurel Street is publicly owned land; Robert’s vision is to make that the most significant waterfront in the nation
