THIS WEEK’S MEETING
President Scott brought the meeting to order by inviting Nancy Vaughan to lead us in the pledge. Then Wendy Patrick delivered an invocation reminding us of the power for good we all have within us. Linda Jalving and Jim Mulvaney then led us in a round of “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
GUESTS
Apparently today was "Spouse Day" at the Club, with Bobbi Spinner-Flack’s husband Dave and Alex Kwoka’s husband Bob in attendance. We also had our usual contingent of guests, prospective members and visiting Rotarians including Mark Evans from the Dulles Club in Wa. D.C.
SGT. AT ARMS
Sgt. Tom auctioned off some golf balls from Holes for Heroes Tournament to Don Munksgaard for $30, and got Linda Jalving to pay $5 for something she had left at the Club last week. Then Bonnie Struzik and Linda Jalving won the drawing to pull the red marble out of the bag, but both pulled green, so that leaves just 6 green and 1 red marble for next week – the pot is up to $970!!
Birthdays this week: Pat Cowett, Wendy Patrick & Gary Rice.
Anniversaries this week: Randy Gregson, Tom Sayer, Chris Jacobs and Jim Lauth

THIS WEEK'S GUEST SPEAKER
Jim Mulvaney introduced Sister Patricia Cruise, the new President and CEO of St. Vincent de Paul and Father Joe’s Villages.

Sister Trish comes from a long impressive 30+ year history of service which started as a child when she first volunteered as a kid to move furniture around for her father’s Rotary Club’s charity auction in Westchester, Massachusetts. She has been in San Diego for only 7-weeks and has now taken over for Father Joe Carroll who has stepped down from day-to-day management for health reasons. Father Joe’s Villages provides beds for 1,300 homeless each night and serves over 4,000 meals per day. The meal service is used to gain trust so that educational and health services will be accepted, along with the Challenge to Change program to ease the homeless off the streets and into self-sufficiency. The most critical challenge is mental illness which affects 75% of the homeless, and Father Joe’s provides a clinic downtown to treat these mental health issues. Sister Cruise’s challenge to us is to “Pool our resources, our knowledge, our compassion. Be bold and spread the values of truth, love, respect and service outside these walls and into the world. By doing se, we can help break the cycle of poverty and despair into which so many have been born. Continue to challenge yourselves. Challenge each other. In doing so, we will do great things together.”
