THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Late again, yours truly missed the opening ceremonies.  Guess what my New Year’s Resolution will be?

announcements

Laurence Skelly announced his departure to the Isle of Man, but he promised to keep in touch via e-mail and the frequent trip back to the Colonies.  Best of luck to you, Laurence.

Pete Tereschuck introduced his son, David, who has completed our website design.  With accolades from Colette for, “having completed this project within my term as President,” Dave showed off the site by passing around a laptop computer.  Starting with our January 3, 2001 meeting, the Bulletins will be posted on the website rather than being sent via e-mail and fax.

Hugh Largey introduced Garfield High School Principal Stouffer to receive a $1,000 grant from our Club to assist students with bus transportation.  With him was student Daisy Trujillo whose addressed our Club with a heartwarming testimonial that is reprinted in its entirety below.

Today was the final collection day to answer Letter to Santa from the kids of Responsibility.  Thanks to all who participated in this annual event.

Marianne McAllister from the Rotaract Club announced a program to provide presents for the kids at the Comprehensive Adolescent Treatment Center.  Their project fell 16 gifts short and Gary Green promptly offered up $150 to take care of ten of them.  Pat Moore followed suit.  Anyone else interested, bring an unwrapped $10-15 gender-neutral gift to KC BBQ by this Friday (today).

chair of the day

Nancy Vaughan was born at the Naval Academy on Memorial Day before her father was transferred to North Island at Coronado where she grew up.  So when she sat next to Joe Ciokon one early Wednesday morning and he offered to fly her on to an aircraft carrier for an overnight with 5,000 men in uniform, her membership to our Club was locked in solid!  Nancy is a civil insurance defense attorney by trade, but her passion is for animals.  She gave us an update on the Humane Society’s moving plans which are imminent.  The $21 million capital campaign is only $4 million away from fulfillment and construction of the new facility will start next year and next door to the newly constructed San Diego County animal shelter.

Daisy Trujillo

[Verbatim text of her comments to our Club]  My name is Daisy Trujillo and I’m a 17-year old single mother.  I came to Garfield for inspiration, support, and motivation so I would be able to start my life, get stable and have a well-off future for my son and myself.  I have accomplished many goals here at Garfield such as the City Middle College Program, Math35, English55, and I’m currently enrolled in Bus101, as well as 4-credits away from graduating.  I knew it would be arduous to do four things at once like go to high school, college, work, and take care of my son but I consider myself fearless and love to take on challenges and Garfield has given me those challenges.  I feel very honored to be here today in behalf of my fellow peers.  I want you to know that we know that the generosity of Rotary International is legendary.  We’re grateful for your interest in us and our school.  Rotarians and Garfield Students, of course, live in two different worlds.  When you make the worlds touch; it can mean real benefits for us.  And who knows?  There may be some unexpected benefits for you.  Thank you.
