THIS WEEK'S MEETING
Colette rang us into the new Millennium (the real start of the new Millennium) and asked Frank DeFrancesco to lead us in the pledge. Pauline Getz delivered the invocation followed by a special memorial given by Janet Klauber to Reba Brophy-King, who passed away over the holidays after a valiant fight against cancer. Linda Jalving then led us in, “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad.”
announcements
Next week’s meeting will actually be at the University Club rather than off-campus as previously advertised.
Still room for the Snowball Express ski trip through District 5340. Click on http://www.rotary5340.org/ for more info.
Don’t miss the January 10th meeting. The theme to this year’s fundraiser will be announced! The date will be March 3rd.
If you are reading this, you have successfully found the new website. Thanks, again, to David Tereschuck for putting the whole thing together for us! Soon to come: historical Bulletins, membership roster, and photo gallery.
chair of the day
Frank De Francesco took his comfortable place at the podium, only to be reminded that he is no longer Sgt.-At-Arms (for quite some time, now). He was rescued from Brooklyn many years ago for a job relocation only to have his job eliminated due to a reorganization. Although his wife considered moving back, Frank would have nothing to do with it – due in no small part to the recollection of the day he closed escrow on the sale of his Brooklyn home when they had to “hide out” for some time while the police arrested the bank robbers on the floor below. Just another day in Brooklyn!
After a stint with Noble Broadcasting (bought by Jacor and soon sold to Clear Channel), Frank took his sizeable severance and “consulted” (read “gardened”) a bit, then took on the challenge of trying to help a non-profit (Catholic Broadcasting) succeed in the business world, and has landed at Emerald City Radio Partners. With Emerald City, Frank will travel to Charlotte, South Carolina, Santa Rosa (wine country) and Hawaii (I’d pay them for a job like that!).
Ever the green thumb, Frank paid “bragging bucks” of $10 to “donate” a palmetto originating from Thailand (grown by Frank, I assume) to each of four members (Tom Sayer, Mike Whitehurst, Gary Green and Linda Jalving) with the stipulation that they each had to actually eat it and report back to the Club. I will go first and say that it burst forth with an earthy citrus explosion of syrupy velvet only slightly diminished by the segmented stiffness of each pithy mouthful. Well done, Frank!
sGT-AT-ARMS
With a light holiday crowd, there were few to fine and Pauline was somewhat at a loss. She had to get a dig in to Pete Tereschuck for the Trolley collisions, but tempered it with kudos for a job well done at the Holiday Bowl. Howard Williams received a Rich Murphy fashion citation for his tie. Bragging Bucks went to Dave Archambault for his 18th wedding anniversary and triple or quadruple fines to Linda Jalving for all the Rolex’s and other baubles she sold to members (Mike Whitehurst, Dan Cleaves, and Jennifer Cusick) this Xmas. Lou Scanlon fined himself for just for the good fortune of living in San Diego after visiting back East and passing on skiing due to minus 10° at the bottom and minus 30° at the top. Janet Klauber is now Director of Development for Casa Cornelia Law Center, a pro bono organization for battered and indigent women.
speaker
Ron Enfield is the founder of Fitness After Fifty. His goal is to educate people on how to stay above the independence line. As we age, our oxygen transport system decreases which eventually makes it impossible to do simple tasks such as walking up stairs, reaching above our head, carrying heavy objects, etc. Fitness delays the inevitable and the goal is to delay it past our date of death so that we drop dead at a ripe old age doing something really fun rather than living our last years dependent on others for care. To beat out Mother Nature, we need to work out for endurance, strength and flexibility. The difference between 500 calories per week and 2000 calories per week in exercise will mean the difference between dependence and independence. Even if we play the usual ebb and flow of on-again-off-again exercise, we will be better off than doing nothing at all. And it is never too late to start. So, start a program of daily exercise and stick to it. How’s that for a New Millennium Resolution!
