This week's Bulletin was written by Tom Sayer.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Past-President Pete Tereschuck did the honors in Colette’s absence today.  Lou Scanlon led the pledge and Pete McGuire delivered the invocation.  With Hugh Largey leading us on, we hit an entirely new level with our rendition of, “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

More Fundraiser updates.  Alan Talbot offered opportunity drawing tickets and reported that Don Lang and Lynn Hamilton are currently leading the King and Queen of Mardi Gras contest with the most tickets sold.  Mike Jones piped up with a call for more corporate sponsors.  So far we have received sponsorship from Margaret Oppliger, US Bank, and Dan Cleaves, Pacific American Advisors.

Peter Shaw announced that the Mayor of Ensenada is giving the “Keys To The City” to Thousand Smiles.  The ceremony is a luncheon on February 4th and anyone interested is invited to show up.  Just check with Peter beforehand.

Yours truly (Tom Sayer) is looking for a few good Rotarians to take a turn at the Bulletin.  Speak now or forever hold your peace (or at least for the next six months).  Just click on my name above to send me an e-mail.  All you need to do is take notes on what goes on at the meeting and e-mail your write up to me by Friday.  I’ll take care of the rest!

Also, please be advised that the Member Roster is about to be posted on the Website (see Member Info page).  Unfortunately, the sign up sheet where everyone indicated any concerns as to having their information posted has gone to Florida with Gene Swarovsky where it is being counted, and re-counted…. So, the password will not be released for several weeks to allow members to allow us to accumulate any objections once again.  Please let us know if you object to any of your contact information (address, phone, fax, e-mail) being posted.  The Roster page will always be password protected in any event, but please click here right now to send Colette an e-mail if you want any of your information deleted from what will be published on this page of the website.

SGT-AT-ARMS

Gary Green filled in for Sergeant Pauline with a call for bragging bucks.  John Turnpit rose to the occasion with his reflections on being at the inauguration.  Martin Blair came back from his recent “11 countries in 23 days” trip with tales from Shangri-La to Timbuktu.  If its Tuesday this must be Belgium, eh Martin?  Lou Scanlon is about to go to London, so might as well drop a few bucks on the Club first.  And Alan Talbott’s firm is merging to become one of the biggest in town!

SPEAKER

Lynn Hamilton introduced Susan Armenta, the head of the Monarch High School, formerly The Place, a downtown high school for homeless kids.  She relayed an example of the kids she works with – a twelve year old boy who spends his night jumping from ghetto room to ghetto room where his mother engages in prostitution.  The mother was bribed with $5 McDonald’s coupons to bring him in every day for a week.  Their first order of business was to teach him how to read the trolley signs so that he could find his way back to the school each day.  Now he is winning essay contests by describing how one day he will win the gold metal at the Olympics!

We should all remember the previous location of the school when it was known as the Place.  Craving normality, the kids succeeded in changing the name to Monarch High School.  Next came fundraising for a new location which is now completed next to Jack-in-the-Box on Pacific Highway.  They have kids at the K level and kids at the college level (14), so they teach a curriculum of the full spectrum and everything in between.  Kids leave with a variety of degrees and GED certificates depending upon individual needs.

Ralph Rubio became so excited about the results at this school that he has set them up with a student-run restaurant.  It will be called the Cabo Café and Grill and will be located within the new premises at the school.  Let’s all try it out!  Maybe an off-site meeting would be appropriate.

These kids need our help.  Susan asks only that members of our Club contact her with a commitment of an hour or two per week for a six week period of time.  Tutors and mentors make all the difference to these kids.  For more information or to reach Susan, call (619) 687-3535 or Click Here.
