THIS WEEK'S MEETING

President Colette Murray convened this morning's meeting by calling Alan Talbott to lead the pledge to the flag.  Pete Doody gave an inspiring reading on perseverance which he found by former Padres Baseball owner Ray Kroc's memorial at the San Diego Sports Heroes Museum in Balboa Park.  Then Linda Jalving (of singing telegram fame and soon to be seen in the San Diego Opera's presentation of "Aida"!) was asked to attempt to lead the assemblage in some sort of harmonious sing.  Linda amazingly succeeded in this most difficult of tasks selecting the tune Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah!  Christine Thompson began her major stride towards achieving her Blue Badge by introducing the morning's guests from as far away as Spokane, Washington, Vista, Chula Vista, aaaand, Club 33!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Frank De Francesco demonstrated his deep seated thespian longings by creatively playing the part of the recently reaffiliated with our club, Dr. Steven Waterman! As Steve was absent today, Frank welcomed Steve, and then accepted as Steve!

John Turpit again exhorted club members to join him in volunteering to tutor inner city 3rd-6th graders in helping them with their homework from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday evenings on the mezzanine of the One America Plaza "Phillips head screwdriver" building.  He proposed a new Blue Badge requirement for new members:  Red Badgers would join him in this worthwhile effort for 5 consecutive Wednesdays.  How about trying for one and a follow-up, and go from there John?

Jennifer Cusick reported a highly successful Tijuana Homebuilding club project this past Saturday with numerous club members joining her in helping a new missionary leader there "learn how to build homes!"  The next opportunity for members to participate in this hands-on type effort will be April 28th where all will ride there together in the District's large heavy duty van.

Alan Talbott and Carol Jensen touted several valued opportunity drawing prizes to be given away at the club's upcoming March 3rd Mardi Gras Fund Raiser event.  Mike Jones thanked Tana Cleaves for arranging an $800 Bank of America entertainment donation for this event and advised there remains just one more high visibility corporate sponsorship donation opportunity to complete our program.

President Colette reported that she, Jennifer Cusick, and Melissa Blackburn represented our club at the Coronado Rotary's 75th Anniversary celebration at the Hotel Del where Rotary International President, Frank Devlin spoke.  The Coronado Club would like us to send a foursome to their 4th Annual Charity Golf Championship at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course on Friday, February 16th.  Colette asks that you call her to reserve (non members also permitted).

Having "promised 6" from our club to our speakers from Rotary International's Sisters Project, Pat Moore said she is sponsoring a child, she acknowledged Dan and Tana Cleaves, and Colette have also done this and asked more members to do likewise.  Lynn Hamilton and Tom Sayer said they will also be sponsoring children in making a lasting difference in their lives.

Jennifer Cusick announced tremendous success in matching funds now allowing clubs in our District at this point to contribute over $160,000 to Operation Malawi.  She will have more news on this later.

President Colette reported our November Rotarian of the Month, Maureen Eberle, has needed to be away caring for her mother under hospice care.  Colette then announced Dan Cleaves as December's Rotarian of the Month for having brought a guest who turned into a member!  Congratulations Dan and new member (wife) Tana)!

SGT-AT-ARMS

In the absence of Sergeant At Arms Pauline Getz, Linda Jalving contributed Valentine Heart boxes "auctioned" off at $10 each.  You can go to Ben Bridge and have Linda stuff the box with a jewel or two to surprise your sweetie.

Carol Jensen proudly bragged for $5 that her son "the banker" was just promoted.

THIS WEEK’s SPEAKER

Citing "the good and bad" of the Internet, Lou Scanlon described how hackers recently manipulated a hospital's patient prescription dosage schedule.  Lou then introduced our speakers involved in a Joint Task Force to catch internet pornography violators and rescue child victims:  San Diego City Detective Chris Armstrong and County Sheriff Detective J.l. Yoder of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Division.  They surprised many in stating that missing children's photos have been discontinued from being on milk cartons for over 3 years.  They pointed out there were 840 internet based child pornography complaints reported in 1993 vs. 188,000 in 1999.  Thanks to hi tech here, San Diego is ranked number one in time spent by teenagers on the internet and number two in numbers of households on the internet.  Our speakers raised the awareness of those present to the real dangers to youth by pedophiles seeking contact with them through the internet.  They cautioned the internet should not be allowed on a child's computer behind their closed bedroom doors and that most kids are clever enough to be able to get around home computer "filters" which, by the way, are not currently allowed on public library computers in the name of freedom of speech.

The size of the challenges the internet presents were described as daunting.  Many were surprised to learn that NAMBLA (National Men Boy Love Alliance) is being defended by the American Civil Liberties Union in trying to restore its child luring web site. Sobering tales of South American Sex Travel Tours were also described.  It was revealed that Russia leader among several other countries have taken a position of not cooperating with requests and subpoenas for Internet e-mail trails of sex predators.  The volume of the problems they described suggest it is now or will be as big as our drug problem. Parents - guard your children!
