THIS WEEK'S MEETING

President-for-the-Day Rob Berry (standing in for Colette Murray) called the meeting to order and asked Chris Milligan to lead the group in the pledge.  Frank De Francesco delivered an inspiring invocation, followed by a rousing rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat” guided by our Chief Songstress Linda Jalving.

Gary Green, on short notice, stepped in to serve as Chair of the Day.  He introduced guests (including Lynn Hamilton’s young son David) and Joe Scaglione (from the Sopranos), and members from Club 33.  When it became apparent our scheduled speaker was a no-show, Gary showed true Rotary spirit by agreeing to fill in as speaker.

Chair of the Day

Gary started by giving some background about himself.  Gary is a charter member of the club; his family is also active in Rotary.  Both his wife and brother are members of Club 33.  Gary is a partner in San Diego Commercial Real Estate Services.  He specializes in tenant representation.  Although Gary sometimes represents landlords, he is careful to represent only one side of a transaction, believing that a broker who tries to represent both parties to a transaction has difficulty fulfilling his fiduciary responsibilities.  Gary also dabbles in real estate development, having recently completed a “build to suit” project in Poway for an industrial tenant.  Now that Gary’s children have graduated from college, he and his wife are traveling more frequently.  They recently returned from a trip to Africa, where they enjoyed visiting Cape Town, South Africa, and traveling through the interior of Africa on safari.

Announcements

Jennifer Cusick, International Services Chair, presented Peter Shaw with a donation from the club in the amount of $1,000, for Thousand Smiles.  In accepting the club’s gift, Peter reminded us that Thousand Smiles is a volunteer group that provides dental, maxillofacial and general surgical services to children in Mexico, Costa Rica and Ciudad Juarez.  The group recently celebrated its 15th year of service.

The Club’s annual fundraiser will take place this Saturday evening.  To date, Jennifer Cusick and Michael Clarkson have sold the most raffle tickets, and will therefore serve as King and Queen of the party (unless someone edges them out before Saturday).

John Bruhn announced that Vocational Services Day will take place on April 11, 2001.  Members are encouraged to visit the Club’s website to sign up.  They can also call John Bruhn (619) 224-4082 or e-mail him at jcbruhn@aol.com.
