THIS WEEK'S MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 when Dan Cleaves led us in the pledge.  Steven Waterman, MD read us a thought provoking parable from an unknown author.

Our songstress for the week is Pauline Getz who led us in the pre-St. Patrick’s Day warm-up, 4-leaf Clover.  After a horrible start we finished actually sounding okay.

Announcements

Fundraiser – Alan Talbott and Carol Jensen were honored for their excellent job for co-chairman of our Mardi Gras fundraiser.  Several committee members as well as donors were thanked for all of their efforts.

It was also  announced that whoever Sue LaCocco is, she is the winner of $750.  Anyone that knows her, please have her contact Alan Talbott.

The district conference is on May 4-5.  If anyone is interested in attending part or all of the conference see Pauline Getz.  She hinted on May 4 there is a party at the San Diego Zoo.

New President – Melissa Blackburn, our President-Elect, is going to be attending the President Elect Seminar this weekend.  She made an announcement as to who her successor would be; Gary Green!  Gary promised a kinder, gentler administration filled with compassionate conservatism.

PAul Harris Fellowship

Pete Tereschuck announced that we have three new Paul Harris Fellows, Lynn Hamilton, Leah Swearingen-Millet and Nancy Vaughan.  Congratulations – where are the guys in our club!

THIS WEEK’s Speaker

Sarah Adams – Program Director.  Sarah came to us from “I Love A Clean San Diego”.  This program promotes exactly what it says.  They sponsor a variety of projects including a Beach cleanup.  Last year in one weekend 3000 people showed up to remove trash from our beaches.  The next one is May of this year - yours truly volunteered to promote this with our club.

Another project is the Storm Drain Stenciling where volunteers stencil pictures of a dolphin with a note that says “I live Downstream”.  Other projects involved adopting a bus stop, which volunteers pick up the trash around a bus stop for a 2 year period of time.

One of the many focuses of “I Love a Clean San Diego” is promoting the 3 R’s; Reduce (trash), Reuse (items) and Recycle.  She poured out some interesting statistics.  We could save 101,000 trees per day if everyone in the U.S.  would recycle their newspapers.  Also, we found out that Miramar Landfill will be full in 10-12 years.  We definitely need societal changes to help deal with these growing concerns.  She encourages everyone to follow the three R’s and be aware of the environment.
