THIS WEEK'S MEETING
President Colette Murray called the well attended breakfast meeting to order with Pete McGuire leading the pledge to the flag. For the invocation, Hugh Largey read an inspiring teamwork themed essay on "Leadership" by San Diego High School Junior and recent Rotary Club sponsored Camp RYLA student, Jesus Garcia. After a brief period of discussion, "Navy Guy" Lou Scanlon was asked to lead the group in a successful singing the Marine Hymn!

Ø President Elect Melissa Blackburn had high praise for the recent District Assembly Meetings just completed. Accepting praise for administering our new "better than the District's" distinguished web site, Tom Sayer asked members to e-mail him when having any problems accessing any parts of it from their computer so he can guide them.

Sgt-At-Arms
Sergeant-At-Arms Pauline Getz praised Swearingen for getting her free publicity and even getting Pauline's picture in the newspaper. THAT'S a fineable offense, Pauline! Pauline fined Hugh Largey for "annoying" the tigers while trying to "communicate" with them in their cages while visiting on our Vocational Services Day the San Diego Zoo last week! Now more emboldened, she fined Past President Pete Tereschuck for seeing her at the Home Depot on Sunday and John Bruhn for his "dashing and daring George Hamilton fashion statement" at this morning's breakfast! Hugh Largey paid a bragging bucks fine to announce his Mayflower Agency, Escondido-based Hidden Valley Mayflower just received the National Joyce Derrick - Mayflower Agent of the Year Award, ranking 1st in the nation in customer service satisfaction, etc. He pointed out his former Mayflower employer received the same award previously only when THEY had the advantages of his talents! Next, our club jeweler, Linda Jalving, touted a Tanzanite Show held at Ben Bridge this week.
New Members
President Colette proudly called upon Peter
Shaw to induct his friend of 20 years, Shawn Moore, as our newest Club Member
who tirelessly volunteers for the Thousand Smiles Program. Colette then introduced her own
personally sponsored new Club Member, Carolyn Smith Morrow, who heads her own
business and marketing communications firm and is COO of Hillcrest's Medical
Alternative Center for medicinal marijuana distribution. Carolyn is doubly congratulated for
also having been married just 2 weeks ago!
THIS WEEK’s SPEAKER
Program
Director, Lynn Hamilton introduced the morning's distinguished speaker,
retiring (from military life only) Colonel Thomas Caughlan, the last Commanding
Officer of the Tustin, CA Helicopter Base and the first Marine Commander of
MCAS Miramar. Colonel Caughlan,
raised in Fallbrook to eventually manage Global responsibilities, now resides
with his family in Scripps Ranch.
In his talk, he praised the merits of team work observed throughout his military career in benefiting society in so many ways, including surgery such as is done by the Thousand Smiles Foundation. He pointed out the military's mission since the fall of the Berlin Wall has shifted more to the securing of humanitarian efforts worldwide and will continue to do so in the future. Colonel Caughlan observed the San Diego Chamber of Commerce completed the most powerful lobbying effort he'd seen with the securing of Miramar's 50% growth to 10,000 personnel while most of the rest of the country's military installations have been cut back. Much of his talk showed how the military has positively responded to environmental and increasing area population requirements. While heavily technical, his presentation gave an amazing overview on how sophisticated radar traffic control works to prevent military-commercial air collisions here and elsewhere.
Colonel Caughlan is available for other speaking engagements by contacting him at E-mail: caughlanta@miramar.usmc.mil.
