This week's Bulletin was written by Joe Ciokon.
THIS WEEK'S MEETING
Past President Pete Tereschuck opened the meeting in the absence of Colette Murray who is on business travel. Gary Sirota led the Pledge and Jim Mulvaney, in honor of our Guest Speaker, belted out "God Bless America", while the rest of us tried to follow. Peter Doody had an inspirational message from the past (Winston Churchill): "Never Give Up...Never, Never, Never Give up!"
Announcements
Ø Melissa Blackburn reminded us that next weekend (starting with Thursday) is the District Conference “Party in the Park.” (Click Here For Details). Let Melissa know if you will be attending either Friday or Saturday night dinner events.
Ø John Turpit is desperate for some help with the tutoring program on Tuesday nights. The commitment is a mere one (1) hour from 6-7 pm on the Mezzanine Level of the One America Plaza Building.
Ø Ron
Erbetta and Joe Ciokon talked about the Navy's Distinguished Visitor (DV)
program (Click Here For Photos of
Prior Trips) and that Vice Admiral Nathman had invited members of the
Rotary to embark on one of the Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers later this
year. Ron is taking requests for July
9th, July 30th, August 7th, October 25th
and December 3rd. An Embarkation
Request is required for the overnight trip. Click Here For
Form.
Joe also announced that USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74), which has been
"adopted" by our club, will be taking family and friends out for a
one day cruise and air show, Saturday, June 30. Ron Erbetta is also compiling a Rotary list for that. There are a limited number of slots
available for "friends". This is a rare opportunity to bring your
spouse and children (over 8 yrs), enjoy a day at sea, and witness an air power
demonstration. But, remember, it
is mainly for the ship's families and friends - so the limit will be set by
Captain Gallagher.
There is a small fee associated with both events. For the overnight VIP trips, a cost of $40 for food and
souvenir ballcap is payable to the ship's wardroom officer on board. A fee of $5 per person is required for
food on the Family Cruise, payable in advance (at time of sign up with Ron). Let's try not to overwhelm the ship for
their generous offer. Tentatively,
a limit of 20 people is being imposed by Joe. He will be meeting with the Captain for a more definitive
quota.
This Week's Speaker
Pete
introduced County Supervisor Ron Roberts who also promoted the aircraft carrier
trip (he's done it), then made some remarks about rising gas prices and soaring
energy costs. He admitted the
County has little influence over those issues except to encourage other forms
of energy and lobby the state for solutions. He, as we all do, mistrusts the information (excuses) given
by the oil companies. But, mainly
he discussed the rehabilitation of the County Administration Building and its
surrounding areas. Much of the
original architecture of the building has been restored and improved and
repairs made. The County plans on upgrading the entire area from Grape Street
to Ivy, including a waterfront park.
Ron gave us some insight on the inner workings of county government and
politics and that there was more
good news than bad. He is proud of
his record of service and the impact he has had and continues to have on some of the proposals before
the Board of Supervisors. He has
high hopes for the future of San Diego and that the airport issue still needs
to be addressed.
