This week's Bulletin was written by Hugh Largey.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING

With a large number of guests in attendance, a new member to be inducted, and numerous items to cover, President Colette Murray called the sizeable gathering to order early.  Hugh Largey led in the pledge to the flag.  Linda Jalving ably led the group sing of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."  A well received invocation was given by Red Badger Carolyn Smith Morrow.  The following is a reproduction of the text of Carolyn's invocation at President Colette’s request:

"Slow Dance"

Have you ever watched kids

On a merry go round

Or listened to the rain

Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You'd better slow down

Don't dance too fast

Time is short

The music won't last

Do you run through each day on the fly

When you ask, "How are you?" do you hear the reply

When the day is done do you lie in bed

with the next hundred chores running through your head?

You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast

Time is short

The music won't last

Ever told your child We'll do it tomorrow

And in your haste, not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die?

'Cause you never had time to call and say "Hi?"

You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast

Time is short

The music won't last

When you run so fast to get somewhere

You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day

It is like an unopened gift...

Thrown away

Life is not a race.

Do take it slower.

Hear the music.

Before the song is over.

Gary Green introduced honored Rotary guests from such wide ranging places as Club 33; Atlanta, GA; Elizabeth City, NC; Villageville, GA; Coronado, CA & Old Mission!  Momentarily lapsing into his best remembered past club position, Gary started to fine the guests for not bringing any flags from their home clubs!  Finally, Gary introduced 9 visiting non-Rotarians from as far away as France and Ghana.

New Member

Club Membership Director Frank De Francesco inducted our newest club member, Landscape Architect Keith French.  Keith chose our club among all those he visited upon transferring from the San Ramon Rotary Club.  In welcoming Keith, Frank predicted he'd set a new Blue Badge indoor record!

Chair of the Day

"Chair of the Day" Jim Dunn gave a brief but intriguing autobiography explaining how he is here in his 3rd year as a lawyer specializing in the Americans with Disabilities Act and criminal defense law such as DWI's.  He pointed out his alma mater Loyola Marymount's most famous grad is Johnny Cochran!  Jim promised to bring his wife, an M.D., to one of our breakfasts on a morning when she doesn't have rounds to make.

sgt-at-arms

Sergeant-at-Arms Pauline Getz wished Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to those in attendance who've been club members for 14 months or less!  Our club list of those stats is that out of date!  She found there were only 2 June birthdays and that she and Lynn Hamilton "married the same man on the same date"!  Linda Jalving added if she were still married, hers would also be in June!

Pauline fined Carol Jensen for Francis Parker School making the TV news on expanding "slightly" for the 1st time in 30 years!

Leah Swearingen bragged she was a "sweet 30' when joining our club just 10 years ago, and was then oriented by Steve Lash?

Alan Talbott bragged that he and his son George finished 1st in the 20 mile Bay to Bay Paddle.  There were 2 canoes in the race!

Dan Cleaves bragged that he and wife Dana celebrated their 2nd Anniversary on May 15th.

This week’s Speaker

Finally, Jane Berry introduced our distinguished Speaker of the Day, Mary Catherine Swanson, Founder and Executive Director of the Avid Center.  Her work so impressed Pulitzer Prize Winner Jonathan Friedman that he wrote a book about her, "Wall of Fame - One Teacher, One Class, and the Power to Save Schools and Transform Lives."  In the book he chronicles lives of students rescued from oblivion by Mary Catherine's efforts.  This once local Clairemont High School English Teacher went on to explain how she revolutionized the process of identifying under-performing students with high potential, obtaining commitments from them, and tutoring them to set on a record breaking winning course for life.  Her system is now used in 16 countries worldwide.

Mary Catherine introduced a new Club 33 Member, "Joe..."President of the Community Housing Corporation who gave a moving testimonial of how his life was transformed by the Avid Program's "raising of the bar" and the little effort that produces the extraordinary from the ordinary.

There were very few dry eyes in our group after hearing her incomparable story.  Gary green then quickly auctioned 5 of the books at the end of her talk.  Get one and read it.  It's awesome.  And so is Mary Catherine Swanson!
