THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Walking into the new, improved Natural History Museum was a real treat. The 3 story atrium crowned with a skylight creates a modern, open and expansive atmosphere – a lovely place to enjoy breakfast.  Besides “the usual” fare, our tasted buds enjoyed a delicious tomato tart, provided by Waters’ Catering.

At 7:30 AM, Collette thanked everyone for the wonderful demotion party and introduced visiting guests and Rotarians.  She then introduced Lynn Hamilton. Lynn received a well deserved round of applause for the wonderful job she has done this year in providing interesting and diverse speakers for our meetings.  She turned the meeting over to Steve Waterman who welcomed us to the museum.  Steve was on the local committee that helped bring the exhibit “Epidemic!  The World of Infectious Diseases” to the San Diego Natural History Museum.  Approximately 50 million people worldwide are killed by infectious diseases each year, and as diseases become antibiotic resistant, these numbers may increase.  Antibiotic resistant infections are on the rise, and the problem needs to be addressed.  Many of these strains are currently untreatable.  The 1990’s brought an increase in epidemics, and Steve spoke about several of these.  Emerging infectious diseases are spreading because humans have become so mobile.  The technology of animal organs to humans may also have an effect, as may the globalization of the world’s food supply. Our public health infrastructure provides a thin line between many of these viruses and the public, and Steve feels we need to increase the number of public health officials to “thicken that line.”  He then invited us to tour the exhibit at our leisure.  Here’s another meeting that  “You just had to be there!”
