Call to Order

This lovely Wednesday morning, our President, Melissa Blackburn called our meeting to order and invited Dan Cleeves to lead our patriotic Club in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Pauline Getz followed with a thoughtful invocation.  Linda Jalving lightened the tone by leading the group in one of our “better” songs, Bicycle Built for Two.

Announcements and Fines

Announcements and fines were numerous and entertaining! Rotaract is sponsoring their 10th Annual La Noche fundraiser at the Rock Bottom Brewery Thursday, July 26th.  All Rotarians and their friends are encouraged to attend for a mere $10…..oops, $20/ticket!

Martin Blair reminded us of the Rotaract mixer he and Cindy are hosting at their wonderful beachfront home in Carlsbad on August 11.  There will be lots of hot dogs, beer and beach volleyball!

Please contact Don Lang to update your information for the Roster.

Stand Down last weekend was another success highlighted by Gary Green, accompanied by his son, Ryan, heckling both the volunteers and the veterans!

Mike, “it’s great to be a Rotarian”, Jones, invited Jim Mulvaney to assist him in inducting our newest member, Mike Sission, a financial planner. Welcome to the Club!!

Margaret Opplinger shared her “awesome experience” aboard the USS Stennis aircraft carrier. Many thanks again to Joe Ciokon for arranging these overnight visits for our members.

Melissa invited us to join the Committee to welcome visiting ambassadorial scholars. Contact her if you would like to help greet and orient these special visitors to our fair city.

sgt.-at-arms

Sergeant Frank was on a roll, awarding Michael Clarkson and Peter, “Heinz” Tereschuck (must be an inside joke….something to do with catsup), lotto tickets to celebrate their birthdays this week.   Then out came the “Catholic collection basket” which garnered donations from Gary Green and  Dan Cleeves.  Pauline Getz volunteered a fine after attending a Rotary meeting in Fresno, which had 3 total women attendees so she was glad to be back!   Melissa Blackburn and Linda Fox were honored for their work with the Women’s Resource Group and will be flying to Chicago to accept their award.  Lou Scanlon, pictured in the Union Tribune chatting with the protestors, was grateful that San Diego was selected for a peaceful and non-controversial Biotechnology summit here.  And lastly Sergeant Frank fined himself for spreading a computer virus.

Melons from Farmer Frank’s garden were sold to several lucky Rotarians and Gary Green auctioned a $20 Rotarct La Noche ticket for $25 with his usual finesse.  And before we broke for the speaker, V was recognized for appearing on TV and commenting on our traffic problems.

Our Speaker

Dr. Ken Druck, a career psychologist and Executive Director of The Jenna Druck Foundation told his story of how his “life changed on a dime” when his high school age daughter, Jenna, departed for a adventure to India 5 years ago only to end in tragedy.  This heart-breaking experience caused Dr. Druck to redirect his own life’s efforts to become an expression of his love for his daughter by establishing a foundation in her memory.

His mission of service addresses 2 activities, based on “what Jenna would want”:

Ø      The Young Women’s Leadership Program for 13 to 18 year olds to facilitate discovering the participants’ gifts early in life through a one year program of community service.

Ø      Families helping Families which serves as a support group for family members who must endure and survive the “worst loss”, that of a child.

Dr. Druck’s foundation was called upon after the Columbine and Santana tragedies.  In a society that shies away from grief, Dr. Druck is devoted to helping these victims come back to life.  Every ethnic and religious group has been helped by the Foundation.  One goal is to help the grieving families who often reject a God that would allow this to happen to their child to find their way back to God.

The total budget for the Foundation to date is $700,000, primarily from personal donations.  Dr. Druck takes no salary.  Recently, an “Angel” provide a donation in the form of a website design.  The website, www.jennadruck.org, has had 17,000 hits in the last 2 months.

The Foundation welcomes volunteer mentors, both men and women, for the Young Women’s Leadership Program and financial donations.
