Announcements

Ø      Vietnam Veterans of San Diego  Margaret Oppliger accepted a plaque on behalf of US Bank, a sponsor of Stand Down, from VVSD President and Chief Executive Officer Al J. Pavich.  Another plaque was accepted by Melissa Blackburn on behalf of the Club.  Then we were treated to a pre-view of the ambitious expansion plans to create an entire recovery campus including a housing project for veterans recovering from drug and alcohol programs.  Following Al Pavich was a touching testimonial from former homeless veteran, former VVSD resident and program participant, and now VVSD Board Member, Peter De Raffaele.  Melissa promised our continued support of this worthy cause.

Ø      Foundation Seminar is this Weekend.  The Annual District Rotary Foundation Seminar will held this year at Salk Institute Auditorium on Saturday 15, 2001 Registration and Breakfast at 7:00 AM and program from 8:15 AM to 11:55 AM.  Learn everything you need to know and keep up to date about your Rotary Foundation.  You will also have two chances to win $500 matching credit towards your Paul Harris Fellowship. (That is a good deal! And with good odds).

Sergeant-at-Arms

Absent today.

Speaker

Former Vietnam War veteran and prisoner of war Dave Carey asked us to analogize the problem-solving and survival skill he experienced first hand as a prisoner of war with the every day problems we encounter in our complicated world.  He impressed us with the strength and resolve of the soldiers captured by the North Vietnamese and held in impossible conditions until the end of the war.  Dave, himself, was held for over 7 years.  They learned a 5x5 grid system of communication and tapped, hummed, whistled, swept and moaned this “language” wherever they found themselves.  Through faith in God, faith in each other and a whole lot of determination, Dave and his fellow prisoners made it through what could only be described as the most harrowing experience imaginable.  Dave’s message to us is that we get what we get because of choices we make.  Our attitude determines our altitude.  Today represents either the most incredible opportunity of all time or the absolute worst period in the history of the world.  We get to decide.  Dave chooses the former and he encourages us to do the same.
