CALL TO ORDER
President Melissa called the meeting to order. Alan Talbot led us all in The Pledge of
Allegiance. Lynn Hamilton gave the
invocation - reflecting on “Beatitudes”.
Jim Mulvaney led the group in a heartfelt, rousing rendition of “God
Bless America.”
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø
President Melissa introduced guests including visiting Rotarian
Lucy Killea from Club 33.
Ø
Foundation
Seminar Melissa recapped the Foundation Seminar held at the Salk
Institute in La Jolla noting that new Rotarian member Christine mentioned to
her “that the seminar showed us what Rotary is all about, where the monies
raised go.” Melissa encouraged all
members to attend the Foundation Seminar when possible. Our own Vanessa from France gave a
presentation at the seminar.
Ø
Past President Colette noted “that it is too bad the
world isn’t run by Rotary.” Colette
then urged all to be Paul Harris Fellows with a gift of $1,000 per year noting
that for each $20 contributed you will receive a raffle ticket.
Ø
Colette advised that the Paul Harris dinner would be
Friday, November 2, at the Hotel Del Coronado. Signups are now open and cost is $55. Our goal is 100% Harris membership so
please sign up!
Ø
President Melissa noted that “Stand Down” had presented
the club with a plaque to thank us for our participation.
Ø
Colette announced that Rotarian of the month for April was
Mike Whitehurst. Congratulation to
Mike!
Ø
Melissa then asked that we put on our calendars the
District Council meeting at Viejas on Tuesday, October 9. The tribal leaders will discuss changes
on the reservations.
Ø
A correction was made by Melissa that it was in fact
Rob Berry and NOT Alan who had circled Lake Tahoe. Melissa also noted that a recent speaker Mary Catherine
Swanson was named Time magazine’s “America’s Best.”
Ø
Melissa continued that at the most recent board meeting
how to help in the disaster efforts was discussed. Rotaract has designated the monies raised from the October
11th fundraiser at Martini Ranch go to disaster relief efforts. Dan Cleaves announced that our club
would join with Rotaract members by donating $1,000 to the fund.
Ø Tom Sayer, joined by his son had bought American flags to give away for “suggested donations” of $2. These were promptly snapped up with donations far exceeding the suggested $2 each (a total of $165 was raised).
Ø
Gary Green suggested that members pledge 10% of their
recent tax “refund” received to the efforts he then passed around a sign-up
pledge sheet.
Ø
It was also noted that at the San Diego memorial
services on the past Friday our own Linda Jalving sang a’cappello and was
wonderful.
Ø
The scheduled kayak trip was postponed and Alan will
announce when it will be rescheduled.
Alan also noted that the fundraising committee will meet after next
week’s Rotary meeting.
SERGEANT-AT-ARMS
Frank noted that it would be extremely hard for him to
squeeze more dollars out of us for his fruit and vegetables, but that did not
stop him from trying! Frank announced
birthdays and anniversaries, including our leader Melissa’s 10-year
anniversary, and Jose’s birthday – Jose seemed to feel he was 32 but this was
greeted with load groans from the group!
Frank then announced an published insightful remark from Mike Whitehurst
about the stock market and how it will react to the crisis “we are not looking
for the Market to rise.” It is
reassuring to have such wise counsel amongst us! For these wise words Mike was awarded a certificate for one
free game of bowling. Members then
shared stories of where they were when the calamity happened and how they were
able to travel home.
SPEAKER
Tana Cleaves introduced the week’s speaker, Don
Walton. Mr. Walton is a volunteer
with the San Diego Zoo and has tracked the Panda population at the zoo,
especially the birth two years ago of the panda cub that aroused huge interest
in the zoo’s endangered animal efforts.
Mr. Walton presented a 20-minute slide show titled
“Panda-monium”. At the completion
of the slide presentation Mr. Walton noted that the zoo is supported by
corporations such as Pacific Bell and individuals who become zoo society
members.
DONATIONS RAISED
Gary announced that a grand total of $2,200 was
raised in the tax drive effort during the meeting. If you were not at our meeting and wish to contribute to
this fund please contact Gary or Melissa.
President Melissa closed our meeting at 8:35 a.m.
