This Week's Meeting

President Melissa Blackburn called the meeting to order and asked Gary Green to lead the group in the pledge.  Michael Clarkson delivered an inspiring invocation, urging compassion for all living things.  He was followed by the group’s rousing rendition of "Old McDonald’s Farm” guided by Songstress Linda Jalving.

The usual contingent of guests from Club 33 and other sources were introduced.  One guest was Barry Sweetman, visiting from a club in Fiji, to attend a wedding in San Diego and visit family.

Announcements

Melissa encouraged members to attend the Paul Harris Foundation dinner on Friday, November 2, 2001. Signups are now open and cost is $55. Our goal is 100% Harris membership, so please sign up!

Gary Green announced that we were within a few hundred dollars of our $4,000 fundraising goal for contributions to the Rotary Club of New York, to assist in disaster relief in Manhattan.  Members who have not yet contributed are asked to consider pledging 10% of their recent tax “refund”.

Mike Jones introduced new member, Rick Logan, who is the President of Bank of Coronado.  Rick is a former Rotarian and is looking forward to becoming actively involved in our club.

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS

Frank de Francesco handed out figs and yellow tomatoes to various deserving members.  Mike Jones recently celebrated a birthday that puts him “north of 40".  Martin and Cindy Blair have been married 25 years; and Jim Mulvaney and his wife have been married for 3 years.

Speaker

Dan Cleaves introduced Suzanne Choy, who is the Executive Director of Uplift (and the wife of former member, Craig Choy).

Suzanne shared with us the Uplift story.  Uplift is an ecumenical program that provides support to children, senior citizens and homeless ex-offenders.  Many members of our club are already familiar with the Kids at Heart program, which is a tutoring and mentoring program for low-income children in targeted areas of San Diego.  Our club supplies tutors once a week at the downtown location, in the One America Plaza building.  Volunteer tutors provide academic assistance and, perhaps more importantly, support and encouragement.

Uplift’s senior program, Senior Partners Plus, addresses the needs of people living in senior housing, who are often isolated and lack transportation.  The program takes seniors on weekly outings to shopping areas, cultural activities and meals.

The Triple Cross program is designed to assist homeless ex-offenders become reintegrated into the job force.  Volunteers assist clients to pursue job opportunities, provide transportation to interviews and other critical destinations.

Thank you, Suzanne, for sharing about your worthwhile organization.  At the end of Suzanne’s talk, Dan Cleaves presented Uplift with a Rotary check for $2,000.

Before the meeting adjourned, Gary Sirota announced that Responsibility’s annual dinner will take place on November 10, 2001, at the Downtown Marriott.  Tickets are $125 per person and Gary will bring invitations to next week’s meeting.
