THIS WEEKS MEETING
Our president, Melissa Blackburn, called to order our first meeting of 2002 almost exactly on time. The Pledge was lead by Steve Waterman. The Invocation was given by one of our newest members, Mike Lewis. He composed an original poem titled “Appreciate.” It was extremely moving and well received. There was talk of finding him a literary agent. Linda Jalving lead the group in a rousing rendition of OH ROTARY, OH ROTARY with something in the song about people sinning all over the world that was not completely understood.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø It was announced that Frank DeFrancesco will be the President of the club for the 2002-2003 year. Also, Lou Scanlon will be Gary Green’s Sergeant at Arms next year.
Ø Vanessa Dubois described her experience at the Holiday Bowl saying that it was much different than the Chargers games she attended.
Ø Ron Erbetta announced that all of the fundraiser sponsorships have been filled with the exception of the entertainment which will be split into 4 sponsorships of $500 each.
Ø Colette Murray mentioned that all you need to do is fill your pig in order to be a sustaining Paul Harris Fellow.
Ø Lynn LaBreche-Hamilton announced the 3rd annual Sushi Party to be held at her house on the first weekend of February, exact date and price to be determined.
FINES
Frank DeFrancesco, the Sergeant at Arms, issued fines for a variety of things including a dollar from every one who received one of those Christmas form letters this year. Gary Green paid to brag about his only daughter’s wedding.
SPEAKER
We were honored to have the District
Governor, Bill Sturgeon, speak to the club today. He started by reflecting
briefly on the tragic events of this last year. He also pointed out that those
events call for the promise of a positive force equal to the evil this year.
The Governor reflected on the fact that we as Rotarians, to some extent, tend
to try to fix things with money, which is not always the most effective way. We
should all look for ways to get involved personally and not just pay others to
solve the world’s great problems.
He discussed the Rotary Foundation, which he obviously has a passion for. One thing that was particularly interesting is the fact that the Rotary Foundation actually distributes more than it takes in each year. The Foundation is operated on its investment proceeds and usually has a surplus to add to the principle originally given. It was Bill’s idea to put a $2 bill in your piggybank each week and become a sustaining Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Foundation distributes over $100 million dollars per year and $2 Bill says to do your part!
The Governor also discussed the District Conference in May. He explained there would 6 hours of Rotary business but the main purpose of the event is fellowship. The event will be held on a Princess Cruise Line ship, which will sail to Ensenada, Mexico. The price includes 3 nights on the ship, 3 nights entertainment and all the food you want including free room service! A video of the Cruise Line’s was shown and after a quote from Moby Dick, we all wanted to go. Prices start at $260 per person and you must decide soon as we are just about ready to release a portion of the block or staterooms reserved, which will also raise the price.
The Governor closed with a story of a man who perpetually asked the question of speakers, “What is the meaning of life?” He finally received an appropriate answer. A distinguished speaker at the Peace Institute in Crete told how he found a broken mirror when he was a child. He polished the mirror and used it to reflect light into areas that had never before seen light. As he grew older, he realized that the mirror was a metaphor for life. The meaning of life can be found when you spend your efforts reflecting goodness, and truth into the hearts of men. The Rotary Pin can be thought of as a mirror and you should wear it proudly. Thank you Governor Bill!
