THIS WEEKS MEETING

The January 23rd meeting was announced by our President Melissa Blackburn.  Jim Mulvaney started the morning off with a short IRISH poem and also led the group with a fantastic rendition of “Our Country Tis of Thee”.  Melissa proceeded to request that the Fund Raising Committee address the club.  Dressed in Patriotic accents and with some background music the Committee made the following announcements.

Fund Raising Committee Announcements

Ø      Alan Talbot announced that “The Red White and Blue Ball” will be held on March 23rd at the U.S Grant Hotel.

Ø      Carol Jensen indicated that invitations and reservation forms will be passed out at the end of the meeting.

Ø      Margaret Oppliger identified two table options. The standard will accommodate 8 people with a contribution of $600.00.  The Freedom Table (VIP) will accommodate 8 people with a contribution of $800.00.  Margaret mentioned that the Freedom table will offer some extra perks.

Ø      Members are urged to bring additional guests.  Whether they are potentially new members, guests and or clients.

Ø      We have one sponsorship spot available left for the band.  The total cost is 2,500.  Ron Erbetta indicated that this can be split in any fashion.

Ø      The band that will be entertaining us that evening is the same one from last year.  they are called Kicks.

Ø      There will be free parking that evening thanks to the efforts of Margaret Oppliger and Jose Hernandez.

Ø      Maureen Eberle made a request for members to obtain donated products and services for the Silent Auction.  Some of the suggestions were: gift baskets, restaurant gift certificates, and golf items.

Announcements

Melissa made several more announcements that included:

Ø      The Vietnam Veterans of San Diego are being awarded a presentation on Channel 10 on Thursday 24th at 8:00 am.

Ø      Club 33 will be having a dinner on February 7th to celebrate its’ 90th anniversary.

Ø      District council conference cruise in May.

Ø      Hugh Largey announced that our student of the month would not be able to attend this morning’s meeting so that she could take her English final.  Mr. Orville Brown from San Diego High School stood in for her.

Ø      Lynn Hamilton reminded everyone about the Sushi dinner she and her husband will be having on February 1st.  Those that are interested should fill out their name on the registration sheet or contact Lynn directly.

FINES

Sergeant at Arms Frank De Francesco made the following observations

Ø      Louis Scanlon was thanked for the two ticket fixings that he donated to the club.

Ø      Frank also commented on last week’s bulletin written by Rick Logan.  The level of professionalism that was obvious in the bulletin reminded Frank of a New York Times writer.

Ø      Leah Swearingen-Millett announced that her friend and guest this week at Rotary ran the San Diego Marathon recently.

Ø      Gary Green made a donation on behalf of Colette Murray’s patriotic red dress.  I think he used the term “FASHION FINE”.

Ø      Mike Lewis threw in a $10.00 donation for the 14 unanimous votes that Pearson Ford received from San Diego City Council just recently.

Ø      Melissa made us aware of the significant differences to the legal process between San Diego County and Orange County.  Our Guest speaker, Superior Court Judge, Larry Sterling, supported her comments with a $20.00 donation.

Guest Speaker Superior Court Judge Larry StIrling

Unfortunately, as I have gone back to read my notes I find it a bit difficult to summarize his speech.  I think it is safe to say that there was definitely an incredible amount of information that he shared with our club.  My conclusion to his speech was that San Diego is a great place to live and work in.  Like any other major metropolitan area, we must find new methods to deal with crime.   I believe that we are fortunate to have people like Judge Sterling who are committed to improving the system.
