THIS WEEKS MEETING

I have to say this was one of the best meetings; unfortunately, I had to take these notes

Our President Melissa Blackburn commenced the January 30th meeting. Jim Lauth led the morning off by leading the pledge of allegiance.  Melissa Blackburn then read the invocation written by Michael Clarkson. Michael Clarkson decided he would rather have Melissa read the invocation rather than put on her “chick glasses”.  After the invocation we had our Student of the month  come up and perform the national anthem  solo.  She had previously sung the anthem at  Qualcomm Stadium and received an ovation from the group for a spectacular rendition.

Announcement & Fund Raising

Ø      Hugh Largey introduced our student of the month. She’s currently attending San Diego High School. She looks forward to extending her studies of the performing arts after she graduates. She  is off to a great start based on her singing capabilities.

Ø      Ron Erbetta reminded everyone about the Red, White and Blue Ball on Saturday March 23 at the U.S Grant. Ron is looking for a few sponsors and handed out a sponsorship list.  For more information on sponsorship you can call Ron at 619.226.4101 or send an e-mail to ronerbetta@aol.com

Ø      Michael Jones and Dave Ferguson were thanked for making an early effort at reserving space at the Grant for the Dinner.

Ø      Melissa Blackburn announced the following upcoming events that you are encouraged to attend: 90th anniversary of club 33; District Conference cruise; and the Salt Lake City Rotarians’ offer to host anyone who would like to come to the Olympic Games.

Ø      Gary Green then took the floor and began asking for pledges to host the entertainment at the Red, White and Blue Ball.  He was able to get commitments from several members.

The following person has been proposed as a new member and will be inducted under the classification listed below unless written objection is received by our Club Secretary within ten days of the date of this Bulletin:

FINES, BRAGS AND BITCHES

Sergeant at Arms, Frank De Francesco made the following observations:

Ø      William Poirier was fined for writing a short blurb on last week’s guest speaker.

Ø      Tana Cleaves was fined for wearing white before Memorial Day weekend.

Ø      Linda Jalving from Ben Bridge donated several flag calendars, which were auctioned off quickly.  She said she would bring some more in for the next meeting.

Guest Speaker Svetlana Krasynska from Children of Chernobly foundation

Svetlana Krasynska was born and raised in the Ukraine. She came to this country four and half years ago as an exchange student. She is currently employed at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps as a foreign legal expert in Intellectual Property.  She is one of the founders and Vice-President of the Ukrainian-American Business Professional Association and currently President and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Children of Chernobyl Foundation.

Krasynska’s organization brings 30 underprivileged children from radiation-contaminated areas for a summer health recuperation respite here in San Diego. The children are paired with sponsor families and spend the summer in their homes. Krasynska’s organization believes the 30-day period out of the contaminated area helps the children rebuild their immune systems.  In addition to bringing 30 underprivileged children to the U.S., the foundation provides a Ukrainian orphanage with educational materials, and provides 50 destitute children-invalids grants toward medication.

It should be noted that Dave Donnelly has provided pro bono dental care to some of the children. The main source of funding for the group is through selling the art of older children from Minsk in the U.S., which helps fund the $1,000 dollar cost per child to bring them to San Diego. If anyone is interested in viewing the art you can go to www.cofcsd.org. and learn more about the organization.
