THIS WEEK’S MEETING

This Valentine's Eve Meeting began with President Melissa Blackburn calling upon Lou Scanlon to lead the pledge to the flag.  Carol Jensen then offered a "positive" Valentine's Day Invocation poem in lieu of a more detailed lecture on a supposed legend originating Valentine's Day with the beheading of 2 Christian martyrs of the same name on a February 14th some years ago in Rome!  Carol's selected poem by Emily Dickinson began, "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain."  Linda Jalving continued the upbeat tone by successfully leading the group in singing A Bicycle Built For Two.

Several distinguished guests from this area, Club 33, and even South America were introduced.  Then Gary Green introduced his guest, Brook Sullivan, observing, “She came out here to live with my son, works for my wife, and hopefully will provide me with some grandchildren"!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Melissa related that club member Keith French's wife passed away suddenly expressing her own and the club's condolences.  Keith wanted to share these thoughts with the Club:

Jane was my best friend for over 29 years. She is survived by niece Casey Buller and husband Paul of Laguna Hills, CA; nephew John Boone and wife of Algonquin, IL; Sister Ann Boone of Orcas Island, WA; Stepdaughter Karlynn French and husband James of Burton, KS; Stepson Mark French and wife Theresa of Lawrenceville, NJ; Stepson SSgt Todd French and wife Angelia of Augusta, GA. and 7 grand children. Jane was a wonderful wife who's life was an example of volunteerism. She was a member of Junior League and The Assistance League. Should any of the membership be so inclined please send a check to Jane Baldwin c/o Operation School Bell, Assistance League of Greater San Diego, 108 University Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.

Linda Jalving showcased the $795 diamond earrings and jewelry she has donated from Ben Bridge Jewelers for the club's upcoming Annual Dinner Auction (this year's patriotic Red, White, and Blue Ball theme) taking place Saturday, March 23rd at the Downtown U.S. Grant Hotel.

Alan Talbott asked members to especially solicit restaurants they patronize to donate dinner certificates and also to solicit their employers for item donations to our Dinner Auction Fund Raiser.  He cited Maureen Eberle as the member holding the record for securing the most number of hotel package donations for this event.  Carol Jensen added that the Grant Hotel is offering attendees a reduced rate of $159 for the March 23rd Dinner Auction night if they reserve by March 1st, and call the local reservations office between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. during the week.  Alan himself is again offering an amateur canoe contest on Mission Bay as a dinner auction item.  Carol thanked Ron Erbetta and Gary Green for 100% sponsorship for the club's underwritings.  Ron announced Southwest Airlines has donated 2 tickets to anywhere Southwest flies in the U.S. as their support.

Melissa then presented Christine Thompson with her recently earned Rotary Club "Blue Badge" replacing her earlier issued "freshman" Red Badge.

President Melissa thanked Bill Poirier for accepting the chairmanship of this year's Vocational Services Day to be held on Wednesday, April 24th.

Melissa welcomed Lesa Chang back to the breakfast having been away for awhile.  Lesa reported she's in town helping her mother through final chemotherapy treatment but will be attending meetings on a more regular basis starting in May or June.

Mike Jones inducted the club's newest member, a well traveled "cosmopolitan" English native, Kathryn Giblin, who is a self employed marketing consultant for her firm, Creative Writing & Copywriting Solutions.

SERGEANT AT ARMS

Sergeant At Arms Frank De Francesco singled out "canoe boy" Alan Talbott as observing his 44th birthday this week.  Suggesting she's not in Kansas anymore, Frank noted Linda Jalving's bright red shoes (she found in an airport store in Italy).  Linda Fox was cited for having been elected partner at her firm Sheppard, Mullin, Richter& Hampton LLP this past week.  Frank caused a major parade to his "Catholic" basket in fining all Catholics who ate bacon at this Ash Wednesday breakfast $5 for their penance.  Leah Swearingen-Millet piled on Linda Jalving's fashion statement by observing her grandmother used to say, "There are only 2 groups of people who should wear red shoes - children and street walkers"!   Alan Talbott bragged his son George is competing in the Junior Olympics in Columbus, Ohio this year and going to his first school dance with Zack Romaya's daughter!  Tom Sayer paid his bragging bucks for the "absolutely perfect report card his son brought home adding he [Tom] had never seen such a report card before!  Jim Waters relayed how his 6 year old son learned from him as they walked through the school yard that raising one's hand with a middle finger extended is "not a good thing"!

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER

Jim announced that his boss, District Attorney Paul Pfingst, previously scheduled to speak this morning, would not be able to appear due to his children's nanny having a car accident earlier this morning.  Jim, himself, went on to give a most credible "rebuttal" to last week's speaker's remarks about District Attorney and candidate for re-election, Paul Pfingst.  He enumerated an impressive list of incumbent accomplishments including increasing child support revenue collections over the past 6 years from $40 million to $145 million last year, getting record numbers off welfare, pioneering in DNA use in criminal prosecutions to release innocent people, the creation of a stalking unit, a child abduction unit, and an elder abuse unit which are nationally recognized.  He defended "not throwing the book at youths" who've stolen a candy bar coming from a home environment of drug abuse and worse.  Jim gave proud testimony of his boss' bi-partisan recognitions nationwide for his successful innovative policies.  Jim's bemoaning his own job of "managing lawyers" sparked a few chuckles from the group.  He relayed several twists and turns involved in the infamous rape case, alluded to by last week's speaker, which explained how a reduced charge in that case actually made sense.
