THIS WEEK'S MEETING
Colette Murray, our past president, called our meeting to order. Carolyn Morrow led us in the pledge and Joe Ciokon read us a wonderful invocation about the “school of life”. No songbooks were needed as Jim Mulvaney led us in “America”.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Linda Jalving is recuperating from surgery (non-life threatening) and would welcome humorous cards and notes from our members. Vanessa Dubois, our Ambassadorial Scholar, presented a memento from her recent trip back home to France; a miniature Eiffel Tower. Hugh Largey submitted a brochure on yet another candidate for District Attorney, Mark Pettine. John Turpit reminded us of his offer to donate $100.00 to the first (permanent) volunteer for the Kids at Heart Program which meets on Tuesday evenings for an hour during the school year at One America Plaza. Pat Moore reminded us of the home building in Mexico this coming Saturday, February 28. Linda Fox invited us to the Women’s Resource Fair, which we support, also this Saturday from 8:30 to 4:00 at the Community Concourse.
Ron Erbetta updated us on the Fundraiser. With all sponsorships spoken for, the focus is to now solicit donations for the opportunity drawing. All members are asked to contact their favorite restaurants and other places of business for contributions.
Colette
Murray and Dave Ferguson (the “poor hairless fellow”) presented the two new
Paul Harris Fellows, Pat Moore and Rob Berry, their “Olympic Gold” medals. Dave recognized all Paul Harris Fellows
in the Club and encouraged the membership to join the ranks of those who have
made a $1,000.00 donation to this most important foundation.
FINES! FINES? FINES!?!
Although there were no birthdays or anniversaries to note, there was no shortage of members willing to contribute to Sgt. Frank’s “collection basket”. Steve Bridge announced that he is “homeless”, having sold his home in North Park. He and Renee are interested in any Rotarian property leads and are renting a house in Kensington for now. Ron Erbetta is scheduled for one more surgery. Tom Sayer and his two sons conquered the Double Black Diamond ski slopes this past weekend. A visiting Rotarian from Connecticut joined in by congratulating us for our participation in the Paul Harris Foundation. Joe Ciokon filled us in on the military news for the day and offered tickets to the latest Mel Gibson movie for auction.
SPEAKER
Tana Cleaves introduced our speaker, Eric Kaufman of Insight Consulting. Eric, now a management consultant and coach/trainer, was raised amidst the violence in Israel and decided 17 years ago to reject the culture of his childhood and instead focus on compassion and peace. He was therefore surprised when his initial reaction to the tragic events of September was anger and a desire to retaliate violently. Eric reflected on his belief that humans struggle with their natural combative nature and their intellectual desire to cooperate. He proposed that we do not naturally “trust” people, because we then become vulnerable. Effective leaders, however, need to demonstrate trust of their employees and build positive relationships to bring out the best in them.
(Editorial comment: Leah and I decided he was talking about naturally combative, non-trusting men).
