CALL TO ORDER
President Melissa Blackburn called the meeting to order at approximately 7:30 a.m. Mike Jones led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Mike Whitehurst gave the invocation. Missing our normal songbirds (Linda and Jim), and in celebration of Vanessa's birthday, we sang a surprisingly satisfactory rendition of "Happy Birthday."
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Melissa introduced and the Club recognized our Rotarian and non-Rotarian guests (including a guest from Copenhaagen).
Ø Melissa
would like us all to follow up on the great suggestion of Leah at the
Valentine's day meeting about preparing goodie bags for the Senior Center. There are approximately 300 seniors so
if everyone could bring at least one bag of candy, treats, etc.... to the next
meeting, we should be able to provide a wonderful Easter treat for our
seniors!! Thanks!
Ø Due to recent heart surgery (from which he is doing well), Jim Mulvaney will not be able to speak at next week's meeting. In his place, Doug Wilson of Wilson Companies, developer of a downtown loft project at the Ballpark, will speak on March 13.
Ø Alan Talbot reminded the Club of the Red, White & Blue Ball, set for March 23, 2002. The winners of the opportunity drawing will receive (1) two round-trip tickets anywhere Southwest Airlines flies and two-night stay in Washington, D.C.; or (2) a Tiffany vase. Club members were encouraged to assist in obtaining silent auction items.
Ø Ron Erbetta announced and Jane Barry agreed to coordinate, a group Opera event for interested members, for April or May programs.
Ø Leah Swearingen announced that the University Club is offering new memberships at the substantially reduced rate of $50 initiation fee (to be donated to the University Club's sister club in New York City).
Ø Melissa asked that anyone wishing to help Vanessa DuBois stay in the U.S. after she completes her studies on June 2, please help by letting Vanessa know of employment opportunities.
Ø Bill Poirier requested volunteered opportunities for Vocational Services Day, which he is coordinating for the Club.
Ø Mike Jones reported that John Bruhn has agreed to lead a mentorship program to help integrate new members into the Club. We are slightly off our target of one new member per month but expect to finish the year well.
FINES
In the absence of our Sergeant-at-Arms Frank, Melissa's request for "bitches and brags" elicited one bold soul. Jennifer Cusick bragged that she had just successfully completed her first jury trial. Congratulations to Jennifer.
OUR
SPEAKER
Tana introduced our speaker for the day, well known political cartoonist Steve Kelley. Steve easily achieved his announced goal for the morning: Eliciting morning giggles from our Club. He admitted to having almost forgotten to bring his slides, for which we almost failed to provide the slide projector. His brief slide show included his favorite "stupid sign" of all times, the "Out of Order" sign on the wall in the men's bathroom in place of a missing urinal. His "best" cartoon was on the theme of sexual harassment, which he believes clearly shows the difference between men's and women's perspective on the topic (a "Mars/Venus" dichotomy).
Steve graciously and
entertainingly fielded questions from the group regarding his approach to his
work, his preference for provocative over beige and boring, his experience that
people are less uptight than newspaper editors believe, and the infuriating
risk that his cartoon irony will be misinterpreted as taking a serious topic
lightly (such as school shootings).
Made to look easy to the viewer, Steve admitted that his work is very
difficult. He is currently on a
mission to determine his next "career" and is speaking and writing in
the interim.
Melissa thanked Steve and adjourned the meeting at 8:30.
