This week's Bulletin was written by Tom Sayer.

CALL TO ORDER

President Melissa Blackburn called the meeting to order at approximately 7:30 a.m.  Tom Sayer led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Dave Ferguson delivered a stirring invocation of his own creation honoring the heroism of the flight crews involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks (Click Here For Full Text).  Hugh O’Largey then led us in, what else but, “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Carol Jensen reminded us that the Red, White and Blue Ball is a week from Saturday (March 23rd) at the US Grant Hotel.  If you have not already done so, please RSVP.  The committee needs to know whether or not you will be attending.

Ø      Gary Green returned from PETS all “cranked up” with enthusiasm.  The theme for 2002-03 will be, “Sew The Seeds Of Love.”  Rotary International has set a goal of raising $400 million by January, 2005 to complete the job of eradicating polio worldwide.  To accomplish this, Rotary seeks to raise $80 million from Rotarians which will be matched 4-1 by Bill Gates and others.  Although not official yet, rumor has it that the next grand RI project will be the eradication of AIDS.

Ø      Thanks to John Bruhn for taking on the Mentorship Project for new members.

Ø      Please bring a bag of candy to the next meeting so that we can make up Easter baskets for seniors.  Also, please consider joining Leah Swearingen-Millet, Carol Jensen and Susan Millard-Davis for a luncheon on April 26th to benefit the Senior Center.

Ø      Please note that Dave Ferguson has secured a tour of the new NBC studio on Vocational Services Day.  Only catch, you don’t have to get up so early – the tour will start at 8:30 am instead of the usual 7 am.

Ø      Two additional Rotary fundraisers on March 23rd – the City Heights Sewing Project is having a open house with Sewing, Taquitos and Sambussas from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at University and 50th  And just down the street (University and 40th) will be the Preuss School Interact Car Wash from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Ø      Pat Moore and Colette Murray are looking for someone to share some Padres tickets (2 seats, ¼ season package, $900 (each seat?) or something like that).

FINES

Carolyn Morrow remains “35” this week.  Mike Lewis took a hit for misspelling his wife’s name on the sign-in sheet.  Our Bulletin took a hit for not listing attendance stats as does the Clovis Rotary Club in New Mexico.  (Frankie, what were you doing at a Rotary Club meeting in Clovis, NM in the first place?)  For the record:

Ø      Absent for the last year:  Gary Rice

Ø      Absent for the last 2 years:  Cathleen Silliman

Ø      Absent for the last 5 years:  Ali Mojdehi & Lester Machado

Ø      Not sure if he ever actually attended a meeting:  Bill McCurine.

Alan Talbott was fined for unabashed self-promotion.  Also, son George has jumped from “D” Class to “B” Class in fencing.

OUR SPEAKER

Doug Wilson returned for the third time to update the Club on downtown development.  After having built Symphony Towers, Doug has not turned his talents to residential development with the PARKLOFT project.  All of the East Village is tremendously under-developed and would remain so without the advent of the Ballpark.  This catalyst will result in over $1 billion in invested capital to build out this area of our city.  Just like the Horton Plaza project, the Ballpark will dramatically redevelop the East Village.

As far as the Parkloft Project is concerned, units will range from about 930 to 3,000 square feet with price tags from $300,000 to well over $1 million.  The concept is high-end open floor plans in a poured-in-place concrete building wrapped in brick with post tension slabs and dual wall construction, built to the newest building standards.  Check out the website at www.parkloft.com.
