This Week's Meeting
President Melissa Blackburn called the meeting to order and asked Kurt Buska to lead the pledge. Mike Jones delivered an invocation plucked from a Rotary website devoted to inspirational messages incorporating the 4-Way test. Mike’s invocation was followed by the group’s rousing rendition of "She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain,” guided by Songstress Linda Jalving.
The contingent of guests from Club 33 included Michael Uberuaga, Berit Durler and Jim Jackson. Other visitors included a Rotarian from Ashland, Ontario; Vanessa DuBois (a Rotary scholar); and Paul Soleil from Rotaract.

Ø Vocational Services Day will take place on April 24, 2002, and members were encouraged to sign up because spaces are going fast. The NBC studio tour is already filled.
Ø Gary Green announced that the next District Assembly will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at West Hills High School on April 6, 2002. Members with red badges and others are welcome to attend.
Ø The 4-Way speech contest will take place on April 9, 2002, at the La Jolla Marriott, immediately before the District Council meeting. Members are encouraged to attend to support the winner of our own recent contest.
New Member
Mike Jones took the lectern to welcome new member Leanne Owens. Leanne, who was sponsored by Nancy Vaughan, is a Special Events Coordinator for the Humane Society. Leanne hails from South Carolina and speaks with a delightful drawl. She has already participated in our recent fundraiser and looks forward to becoming involved in our volunteer activities.
sgt. at arms
Sergeant-at-Arms Frank de Francesco congratulated Jennifer Cusick and “V” Anisimow on recent birthdays. Hugh Largey was recognized for becoming a honcho in the Knights of Columbus. Frank chided Martin Blair for the Jayhawks recent basketball loss and inquired about possible foul play that led Gary Green to draw his wife’s name for the fundraiser grand prize.
Thanks to Member on Leave Jim Herr, Gary Green auctioned off two clocks that were inadvertently omitted from the fundraiser auction. Nancy Vaughan and Jim Mulvaney were the lucky bidders.
this week’s speaker
Tana Cleaves introduced our speaker, Jim Brogan, former NBA player and current CEO of Youth Solutions Unlimited. Jim played for the San Diego Clippers and Golden State Warriors against some of the biggest names in NBA history, including Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He now speaks to young people all over the country about tools for success. He is an enthusiastic supporter of Rotary youth programs and recently participated in the RYLA sponsored 3-day retreat.
After interviewing business executives, sports figures and other celebrities, Jim has discovered that virtually all agree that their educations would have been more beneficial if they had received guidance in the following important areas:
Ø (1) Goal Setting. Jim points out that young people today are going “Mach 2 with their hair on fire”. They need instruction in the importance of setting goals;
Ø (2) Organization. Jim thinks everyone suffers from ADD to some extent. People, especially young people, all learn in different ways. Recognizing and understanding the effect of these differences can make even the most easily distracted young people more productive;
Ø (3) Attitude. Young people need to understand that each person can make a difference by positively influence peers; and
Ø (4) Smile. Jim advocates smiling as “big as you can”.
Jim has written a chapter incorporating his ideas for a book published by the US Olympic Committee. The book has been positively received by young people around the country.
Jim’s talk was lively and inspiring.
