Many thanks to Bill Poirier and all the members who hosted Vocational Services Day.

We heard from Henry Rios, the Director of the SB 65 Drug and Alcohol Prevention Program at SDHS.  This program, which we support through annual contributions, provides valuable mentoring, tutoring, internships and other services to at-risk students with academic and attendance problems as well as drug and alcohol abuse problems.  This program seeks to motivate, educate and graduate students who might otherwise drop out of school.

april student of the month

From R to L, Karla, her sister and Melissa

Karla Ramirez came to the United States form Mexico at the age of seven.  She was put in English emersion classes and quickly learned the language.  This is an understatement as she has earned high grades in I.B. English, Honors English, and is presently enrolled in Advanced English.  These accomplishments contrast with difficult early years when she was negatively influenced by peer pressures.  Karla's mother convinced her that this was a road to ruin and she has made a remarkable turnaround.  Karla plans to attend Mesa College, and complete her undergraduate degree at SDSU.  She hopes to pursue an advanced degree at a UC school and enter the field of infant psychology.

SGT. FRANK

A few birthdays (Mike Lewis and Kirk Hill) started things off.  Then Dave Ferguson took a hit when the members got stuck in an elevator during the NBC Tour on VSD.  Somehow Mulvaney wasn’t in the elevator and ended up getting all the breakfast!  Also, Wolfgang Puck apparently had recently fed the crew of the USS Connie from his “Recipes From A U-Boat” cookbook.  That got Margaret Oppliger a fine.  And non-profit headhunter extraordinaire Colette Murray refused to comment as to the true purpose behind the recently formed Red Cross Blue Ribbon Panel.

Sheriff bill kolender

Sheriff Bill Kolender

Bill Kolender became the 28th Sheriff of San Diego County on January 2, 1995, was reelected to a second 4-year term in June of 1998, and has just been reelected again to serve until 2007.  Bill previously served as the Chief of Police for San Diego, having been appointed at the young age of 40 (one of the youngest police chiefs in the nation).  Prior to serving as Sheriff, he served for 3-1/2 years as the Director of the California Youth Authority, an appointment made by then-Governor Pete Wilson.  On the community service side, Bill is an active member of several community-based law enforcement and charitable organizations, including 31-years as a member of Club 33.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department employs 4,000 people and is the 3rd largest law enforcement agency in California, behind only the LAPD and the LA Sheriff’s Department.  Bill oversees 7 jails and serves as the primary contract law enforcement agency for 9 cities within the county of San Diego.  The County Marshals have been consolidated into the Sheriff’s Department as well.

Bill has been very active in collaborating with numerous other educational and law enforcement agencies in order to proactively address such social issues as school violence, teen violence and terrorism.  Due in no small part to such efforts, the violence at Santana High School was able to be very quickly controlled.

Many new developments have occurred since the rancor that existed when Bill was first elected.  Bill initiated a year-long program for his 80 top management personnel which involved 2-day retreats each month to discuss values, the mission of the Department and goals.  The values discussed were both as they relate to the community and as they relate internally between personnel of the Department.  This program then was taken to all employees to instill a clear answer to the questions, “Why are you here, why am I (Bill) here, and where are we going?”  Ethics are taught from the top down to allow all personnel to trust each other, leading to greater workplace satisfaction.

Thanks for your great leadership, Bill.  Keep up the good work!
