Ø Mike Whitehurst invited us all to respond to a request from SDHS for internships. One applicant is especially keen on doing electrical wiring work for a home contractor and another is interested in the medical field. Click Here to e-mail Mike if you have any leads.
Ø Keith French and Rick Logan have both earned their blue badges.
Ø Gary Green took the podium in anticipation of his soon to be presidency. He will be focusing on three goals next year: 1) retaining and recruiting membership; 2) maintaining our high level of quality speakers; and 3) making a significant contribution to the final Rotary International push to eradicate polio worldwide. Gary also reminded us that the Demotion Party is on the evening of Tuesday, June 18th and we will be dark the following Wednesday morning. We will also be dark on July 3rd.
Ø Margaret Oppliger reported that a great time was had by all at the Thousand Laughs for Thousand Smiles fundraiser. Shawn Moore noted that the Ensenada clinic, which was started with barber chairs, now boasts facilities to rival anything in San Diego.
Ø Keith French shared some pictures of a foggy view from the University Club. Click Here To View.
SGT. FRANK
Dr. Dave Donnelly and Hugh Largey had birthdays this week. The closest we could come to actual ages was that Hugh was born in the year of the steel penny.
Philip Welp paid dearly for a television appearance with Rod Luck. And then Frank pulled out a photo of an Olympic snowboarder half-piping to the Silver medal. Was this our own Phil Welp? Apparently this now autographed photo will be auctioned off next week.
Martin Blair took a hit for a recent magazine photo of KC BBQ but the only patrons actually eating were Martin and Cyndi.
Dave Ferguson taunted Alan Talbott with the news that his son took part in the Sonoma State trouncing of Stanford in lacrosse and is now headed to the nationals. Maybe we should arrange for a match between the Talbott's armed with sabers vs. the Fergusons with lacrosse sticks?!?
Mike Whitehurst announced that daughter Amy has made the Scripps Ranch High School cheerleading squad.
LeeAnne Owens was proud to say that the Humane Society has just hosted the most successful Adopt-a-Pet ever.
And Maureen Eberle (with her boss in attendance) couldn’t resist bragging about her recent 15 scuba dives in 5 days from an island off Honduras. Sounds like some sort of reality challenge event to me!
REINT REINDERS< PRESIDENT AND CEO OF CONVIS
|
Reint Reinders |
Reint Reinders came to the US from the Netherlands in 1969 to build on his career in the Hospitality Industry with the New York Hilton. He soon moved to Marriott where he spent 21 years at various positions and properties culminating in the opening as GM of the La Jolla Marriott. In 1991, Reint joined the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau (ConVIS) as President and CEO. Over the years he has received many awards and accolades including GM of the Year while at Marriott and the honor of being one of the 25 most influential people within the Meeting Industry. Reint is past-president of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club and resides with his wife and daughter in Scripps Ranch.
San Diego’s Tourism Industry took less of a hit from 9-11 than most of the rest of the country. Although down in occupancy and room rates, San Diego actually grown in market share, jumping over Anaheim and Los Angeles to take over the #3 spot behind Orlando and Las Vegas in leisure travel. Our summer will be “ok” but we are still down 5% in leisure and 10% in business travel from a year ago. Many businesses have re-examined their travel budgets since 9-11 and technology options (tele- and video-conferencing) are replacing some face-to-face meetings. The slowdown is going to last a bit longer than most with as many as 15-20% of the population making permanent and systemic changes in their lifestyles. Expect to wait until 2004 for the admittedly awesome levels of 2000 to return. Some airlines won’t see the recovery until the end of 2004.
In response to the crisis, ConVIS has joined forces with many marketing partners to co-brand the San Diego marks outside of our county. The bright, warm sunshine logo combines with ads for casinos, attractions and arts and cultural amenities of our city. “We Salt Margaritas, Not Roads” can be seen posted in Denver, for example. With his great team and a little help from such things as an expanded Convention Center and the Super Bowl, Reint expects 2003 to be San Diego’s greatest convention year ever. Here, here to that!
