THIS WEEK'S MEETING

Melissa Blackburn called our meeting to order this cool spring morning. Ron Erbetta led us in the pledge and Rob Berry spoke of the virtues of “The True Rotarian.”  Linda Jalving suggested we sing of “our favorite things; …raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens”….

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Gary Green, our incoming president, reported on the pre-Board meeting that was held at his home the previous evening. Gary’s stated goals for his administration are to retain membership, increase membership and to enlist excellent speakers for our weekly meetings.  Gary has also organized a golf tournament to be held on November 15 at Coronado to benefit the international Rotary effort to eradicate polio.  Each dollar raised will be matched 4 to 1 by The Bill Gates Foundation and the World Bank.  Gary is looking for sponsors for this “scramble” format golf event and all Rotarians and their guests are assured of a great day on the links, lunch and dinner!

Ø      Joe Ciokon gave us an update on the current activities of our fine military forces, noting that the Stennis is returning home from the war zone.  In addition, “Stand Down” the annual event for homeless veterans will be held July 12 on the grounds of San Diego High School. Donations of clothing of any kind are welcome and can be dropped off at the Stand Down offices at 4141 Pacific Coast Highway.

Ø      May 20 will be the next Board meeting at Melissa Blackburn’s office.

Ø      Late Red White and Blue Ball auction items will be posted on the web and all are encouraged to bid!  Items include tickets to the La Jolla Playhouse (value $78), 2 rounds of golf at Steele Canyon Country Club, and a 3-day, 2 nights stay at the Avi Resort in Laughlin, Nevada.  All bids should go to Carol Jensen at jensencm@aol.com

 FINES! FINES? FINES!?!

Sergeant (Farmer) Frank collected fine after fine from Dan Cleaves for his birthday, anniversary and what ever else he was willing to confess to.  He teased Gary Green about the 10 things that happened at the Board Meeting (was there really a wet t-shirt contest???)

Frank also reminded us that our fines, already a substantial $1600.00 worth, would be donated to the Deafness Research Foundation.

SPEAKER

Tana Cleaves introduced our speaker, Carole Ravago, from the Union Tribune who serves in the Public Relations department there. She commented on the mission of the paper, the sponsorships that the paper promotes and the “hawker” program.  Her well-prepared speech was followed by several “compelling” questions from the crowd (got to love those Rotarians who are ready to tackle a controversial subject at 7:00 AM!!)
