THIS WEEK’s MEETING
Melissa opened the meeting to a “standing-room-only” crowd by asking Jim Waters to lead the pledge followed by “The Lord’s Prayer” led by Christine Thompson and a thunderous round of “Yankee Doodle Dandy” led by the Mulvaney-Jalving duet. The 23+ Guests and Visiting Rotarians seemed to outnumber actual members in attendance. Included in the audience were several guests of Vanessa Dubois from France, including her sister, Cinderella.

student of the month
At the age of 16 Roberto Guzman came to the U.S. from Mexico with his mother. He enrolled at San Diego HS even though he did not speak English. Roberto compared this to "going to war without a gun." Roberto studied hard and is now fluent in English. He knows some Italian, and would like to learn Japanese. His high school GPA is 4.0. Roberto is also a talented basketball player. He has played for the Mexican National Team, and helped lead the SDHS Cavers into the playoffs. These accomplishments are even more remarkable considering Roberto suffers from asthma. In December 2001 Roberto was hospitalized for three weeks in Mexico. He worked especially hard to make up the schoolwork he missed, but his GPA slipped to 3.5 that semester. Roberto's mother has returned to the family in Mexico. He now supports himself by working five hours each day, and stills maintains his high grades and basketball activities. Roberto has turned down an offer to play professional basketball in Mexico. He plans to attend a local junior college and eventually transfer to a state university were he can study accounting.
