THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER

Dave Donnelly gave a unique introduction to our speaker, fire fighter Joe Taramina, by reading excerpts from David Halberstam’s book “Firehouse”. Joe  is a 20 year fire department  veteran, and  2 weeks into his new position as a public speaker/educator.  He commented that this was his first  time inside symphony towers, but  that he had rappelled  on the building!  Joe mentioned several times that the San Diego and New York fire fighters have a special bond. Over 100 San Diego fire fighters paid their own way to New York to show their support at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Fire fighters are trained to respond to catastrophic events, and Joe feels that the San Diego department is ready should a terrorist attack occur in San Diego. Their main mission in such events is to save lives as safely as possible. It seems fire fighters are quite modest, being heard saying “I’m just doing my job” time and time again. Joe asked for questions, and many topics were addressed - here’s some miscellaneous “tidbits”:

Ø      San Diego canyons can be fire risks, so be sure to keep your canyon yards free of brush and debris

Ø      The firehouse “hermetically sealed” environment a social as well as work oriented, and many lifelong friendships are formed within it’s walls.

Ø      Ladders only extend to appx. 10 floors and are not meant as a rescue device, but as a “hose extension”

Ø      In case of a terrorist attack on San Diego, be sure you have access to a battery operated (car) radio at all  times, have a “cash stash”, and meet with your neighbors to have a “plan” in your own neighborhood.

Ø      Newer high rise buildings are much less at risk for fire than many of the “older” buildings around town.

Dave presented Joe with the book “Firehouse” as a thank you for speaking at our club this morning.
