THIS WEEK’s MEETING
President Melissa brought our meeting to order at 7:30 AM to allow enough time for our full schedule. Joe C. enlightened us about raising a child. How much it costs (approximately $1.00 per hour until the age of 18), and the benefits - a bundle of love in various guises! Irishman Jim M. led us in the ever popular, "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" Melissa welcomed our guests (which included Franks wife, Chris) and visiting Rotarians.
NEW MEMBERS
Mike J. inducted three fabulous new members
into our club today: Jennifer Kammerer
- Classification: Attorney at Law, guardianships. Jennifer is a UCLA graduate,
married, and loves to sail, golf, and participate in triathlons.
Tim Montague - Classification: Graphic Designer (self
employed). Tim was born in Indiana, is married with 2 children, a UCSD
graduate, and a tennis player.
Ken Tablang - Classification: Real Estate, Urban. Ken was born in Hawaii, is married with 3 cats, and enjoys body surfing and swimming.
Mike reminded us all that Rotary is worthy of our time,
effort, energy, means, and commitment, and then asked each new member to say a
few words. A "pat on the back" to Mike and each of our new members!

The Children of Chernobyl art exhibit in now available on
their web site: www.cofcsd.org.
Sgt.-At-Arms
Sgt. Frank fined (missing in action) Gary Sirota for his
anniversary, but no birthday fines this week, however, Mike C. asked Frank to pay for missing
"twins" Linda J. and Leah S. (both born June 8). Frank then bought out the "big
gun" fund raising garden products: luscious lettuce, and giant radishes
lovingly grown in his garden. LeeAnne O. brought fresh raspberry jam, which
fetched a hefty $20.00 (the pressure was on!) The ever popular braggin' bucks
brought in a huge haul as Gary G. announced the engagement of his son, Hugh L.
invited us to his Knights of Columbus induction ceremony next Wednesday, proud
father Dave F. paid for the first place finish of his son's team, black belt
Joe C. hosted a Japanese Judo team, Christine T. is celebrating the purchase of
her home in Scripps Ranch,, Pat M. just returned from her honeymoon cruise in
Alaska, Lou S. shared his pride in his niece, who just got 3 college scholarships,
Mike L. announced the birth of his son, Alexander, and Bill P. got fined for
(you fill in the blank - sorry, I didn't get it written down).
This Week’s SPeaker
Frank began his introduction of our speaker,
Ralph Strahm, by sharing that he and Chris have a daughter who is deaf. This
disability led them to the Deafness Research Foundation, where they learned
invaluable information regarding deafness. Ralph is the Director of Planned
Giving for the DRF. He began by "donating" to our fund because he is
a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, and then introduced Dr. Elizabeth
Keithley. Dr. Keithley is a professor at UCSD, Division of Otolaryngology. She
is also a researcher, her specialty having to do with the mechanisms of hearing
loss, due to both age, and to inflammations of the inner ear. Being deaf keeps
you from being able to communicate with most of humanity, and Dr. Keithley
feels this is even more devastating than being blind.
The DRF has several goals including making a lifetime of
hearing possible of everyone, promoting a program for every child to be tested
for deafness at birth at the expense of insurance companies, and preventing age
related hearing loss. One of the newest breakthroughs in the field is the development
of an "artificial" ear. Rush Limbaugh had a cochlear implant with remarkable
results. The current cost is approximately $40,000.00. There are also
tremendous improvements being made to hearing aids. Dr. Keithley answered a few
questions, and we ended our meeting by presenting the Deafness Research
Foundation with a $2,000.00 check - lovingly collected year 'round by Sgt.
Frank with all of his "fines". We can all feel wonderful about our
brags this year, knowing we supported such a fine organization!
