This Week’s Program

Gary Green introduced the speaker:  Karen Mc Elliot AED/PAD Consultant to San Diego Project Heart Beat.

Karen’s loss of her best friend, husband, dedicated father and grandfather, Ron Mc Elliot on October 17, 1999 to sudden cardiac arrest, became the inspiration for Project Heartbeat. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was not available for Ron, but in his memory I am passionate about furthering the message that AED’s save lives.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. Over 465,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest.

The most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest is ventricular defibrillation – when the hearts electrical impulses become irregular and the heart is unable to pump oxygen rich blood throughout the body.

Defibrillation sends an electrical current through an erratic heart to restore an organized rhythm. Today there are devices known as or “AED’s” these devices are safe, effective and an easy to use method of restoring the heart to a normal rhythm.

San Diego Project Heart Beat is a Public Access Defibrillation Program. Its main goal “to save lives through early defibrillation.” The key to surviving sudden cardiac arrest is the speed of response. In addition to CPR, most cardiac arrest victims need an immediate electrical shock to restore the heart’s normal rhythm. If a victim receives a shock within one minute, there is a 90% chance of resuscitation. If a victim must wait ten minutes the chance of survival drops to less than 5%.

To reach the goal of saving lives through early defibrillation, San Diego Project Heart Beat’s objective is to make AED as accessible as fire extinguishers throughout our community.

Combining the expertise of Cardiac Science, American Heart Association and San Diego Medical Services Enterprises and other enterprises we have created an AED Angels program to further accessibility to ADE’s in our Community.

To join the team you, your group, business or organization can easily establish an AED program which is accessible, affordable and saves lives call 1-866-4HEARTU (443-2788) 619-533-3439 or visit the website http://www.sandiego.gov

A demonstration AED was given by Kevin Lyon, Pad Coordinator (See photo, above, where Gary was hooked up for the demo).  Ed. Note:  This demo put the rumours to rest when it was confirmed that Gary actually does have a heart ;-)

The program works like this:  Your group, business, organization purchases an AED (approximately 4500 +Tax).  Project Heart Beat provides:

Ø      Physician Medical Oversight

Ø      Training/Certification

Ø      Record Keeping and Data Collection

Ø      Complete Program Maintenance

Ø      Site Selection

Ø      Indemnification

President Gary adjourned the meeting at 8:30 AM.  Members surrounded Karen and Kevin asking questions and thanking them for their contribution to our well-being.
