This week’s fines

Lou Scanlon, on his best behavior in the presence of his boss Chief David Bejarano, administered fines to Mike Jones for his wedding anniversary and Don Lang for his birthday “today!”  Susan Millard-Davis and Dennis Dater, beware, you are on Lou’s most wanted list.  We won’t repeat here why past-pres. Blackburn was fined, let’s just say it was a Duzie – ask her yourself!  Farmer Frank had an array of garden produce available for donations.  On a personal note I’m fining Lou $10 for missing my birthday 2 weeks ago!

This week’s speaker

Lou Scanlon introduced this week’s speaker, Assistant Chief of Police Bill Maheu.  Bill was here to talk about the upcoming Superbowl XXXVII, to be played at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday January 26th, 2003, and the ensuing security issues this event raises in the aftermath of 9-11.

The San Diego Superbowl Host Committee and the 9 sub-committees have been formed with the input from large corporate sponsors, local business and the Police Department to ensure the public of a secure and safe event.  Local, State and Federal law enforcement departments are all involved to make the main event and the 100 different events that will be happening in the 2 weeks leading up to the big game secure and safe for the public and any visiting dignitaries.  An application has been to the Department of Homeland Security to designate the game as a National Special Security Event [NSSE].  If this status is granted this would allow the Secret Service to come in and oversee the security of the event.  With greater funds available this will give more resources to our Police department.

Security at the game itself will consist of several rings around the stadium and police presence on Mission Valley hilltops overlooking the stadium.  Law enforcement officers will study all angles and aspects within the Stadium to defend against snipers.

The Superbowl is a huge economic benefit to local business and the community.  For an outlay by the City of San Diego of just over $3m, the impact to the region is hoped to be in excess of $300m, an impact that will last long after the final whistle had blown.  The aim of our local police department, “San Diego’s Finest”, is to make this event secure, safe and fun for everyone.

Many thanks to our speaker Bill Maheu and our guests.  Gary Green adjourned the meeting at 8:22 am.

Again, another personal note, with regards to security and the “big” event.  Check out Tom Clancy’s “The Sum Of All Fears,” plausible and scared the whatsits out of me!
