This week's Bulletin was written by Linda Fox.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING

The meeting was timely called to order by President Gary Green, with special acknowledgment of our special guests:  District Governor, Larry Scott and Assistant District Governor, Judy Gallegos.

In keeping with President Gary's promise of patriotic songs, Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving lead us in singing "God Bless America."  Frank DeFrancesco gave the invocation - encouraging us to "choose how we live each day."  Guests for the morning included Lee Weekly and Gene Esquivel; Jim Sharek from Oklahoma City; and many more.

New Members Inducted

Michael Jones (far right) introduced and District Governor Larry Scott (2nd from R) inducted two new members:  Lee Weekly (3rd from R) and Gene Esquivel (far left), who were given a standing welcome by the Club members.  Lee presented a check for wheelchairs to the Rotary Foundation, graciously accepted by Jennifer Cusick.

Announcements

Ø      President Gary announced his plan to personally contact all Red-badge members within the next couple of weeks to discuss their progress toward their blue badges.  The seven criteria include:  attendance of a district event or meeting; make-up meeting at another Rotary club; giving the invocation or acting as chair for the day; committee participation; write a weekly bulletin; attendance at a board meeting; and the new requirement to bring a guest.

Ø      Linda Fox announced the first meeting of the fund-raising committee will be held on Tuesday, August 27th at 5:30 p.m., in her law firm's offices at 501 West Broadway, 19th Floor.  Wine and snacks will be served and the goal is to determine the theme and discuss the venue.

Ø      President Gary thanked Tana Cleaves and the program committee for their outstanding work this year, and in particular the program and speaker last week on rape prevention.

Ø      President Gary announced the major fund-raising event to be sponsored by Rotaract, tentatively scheduled for October 24th to support juvenile diabetes foundation.  It will be held at the 4th and B Street nightclub, which has a capacity of 1500 people.  So far Rotaract has obtained one $5,000 personal donation and a $10,000 corporate sponsor - off to a great start!

Ø      Sargent-at-arms Lou Scanlon, introduced for some mysterious reason as Tom Sayer, increased the Club's coffers substantially, with fines for birthdays, anniversaries and Margaret Oppliger's new position at City National Bank.

Ø      Last but not least, we exchanged flags with our guests from Santa Rosa.

Speaker

President Gary introduced our speaker, District Governor Larry Scott from the La Mesa club, with a recitation of only some of the highlights of his 25-year history as a Rotarian.

Larry Scott, who reminded us that he was here 12 years ago when our club was chartered, spoke to us about our responsibilities to our club, and ways to accomplish them, including:

Ø      Fellowship and friendship - In November there will be a Paul Harris celebration at the Natural History Museum.  In May 2003, the National Conference will be held in Laughlin, Nevada.  The International conference this year will be in Brisbane, Australia.  Larry encourages us all to attend.

Ø      Share Rotary with Others - Through efforts to increase our membership, we can accomplish any task we set our minds to.  For instance, with one new member brought in by each of us, we can meet our goal of $400 million needed to eradicate polio.

Ø      Promote individuals and family; make the world a better place - again accomplishable through efforts to increase membership.

Along the lines of fund-raising, Larry shared with us the program for Rotary license plates.  The state of California will refund to qualified service organizations a certain percentage of vehicle license fees collected.  The deadline to participate is the end of this year.  If 7500 individuals sign up by the end of the year, approximately $300,000 will be contributed to Rotary's fund-raising coffers.

Larry spoke briefly about the Wheelchairs for Malawi fund-raiser.  He and Bill McDade have worked hard to identify individuals in Malawi who need wheelchairs, and delivery is set for April 2003.  He encouraged anyone interested in accompanying them on the delivery trip to sign up now.

Larry ended his talk by encouraging us each to put Rotary Internationals' theme for this year, "Sow The Seeds Of Love", into practice by bringing in new members.  If we each commit to doing so, Larry believes we will succeed in making the world a better place for our children.

Rotarian of the Year

After thanking our guest, and before closing the meeting, President Gary announced that the votes have been tallied for Rotarian of the Year for our Club.  Of the seven well-deserving nominees, we selected TOM SAYER.  In Tom's absence, Lou Scanlon graciously accepted the award and posed for pictures with President Gary and District Governor Larry Scott.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30 a.m. with a reminder that Charlene from Pardee Homes will speak next week on affordable housing in San Diego.
