CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting was called to order by President Gary Green. President Green acknowledged that we’ve been having more and more visiting Rotarians than guests. Either the club’s doing things right or:
Ø We must have a “Great” Rotarian fellowship
Ø have “Great” speakers
Ø or the food is really “Great” and people want to have a meal at the University Club.
Martin Blair led us in the “Pledge of Allegiance. In keeping with the tradition, Linda Jalving lead us with the patriotic song, “America the Beautiful.” Before doing our invocation and introducing visiting Rotarians and guest, Gary want to welcome Colette Murray (Foundation Chair) and Mike Whitehurst (Youth Services) who has missed past meeting. GUEST SPEAKER:
Gary introduced Carlene Matchniff,
Director of Community Development for Pardee Homes. She talked and shared a slide show regarding updates and
affordable housing in South San Diego County Area (e.g. National City, Chula
Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, Nestor, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro).
Pardee has been in San Diego for over 50 years and is one of the oldest developers in San Diego County. Many projects currently underway: Palm Promenade (retail mall), Las Americas (outlet retail mall), Gateway Chula Vista (multi-use office & retail), Ocean View Hills (residential community) and the completion of interstate 905 & 125 freeway.
One of the factors that drives-up the price of housing, is the time it takes to process a project through the state and local levels (e.g. due to inflation, carrying cost of the land, taxes, squeezing down the properties sizes, etc.).
In order to build a community, Pardee is an active partner in the South San Diego County school, park and entertainment (e.g. Coor’s Amphitheater, Ocean View Race for Education 5K Run) system. 60% of Pardee home sales are to Latino’s due to jobs/employment across the border. Buyers are coming from all over and moving south due to purchasing power (e.g. purchasing a similar size home for almost half of what they would pay up north (e.g. North, East and Central San Diego County).
President Green presented Ms. Matchniff with a Rotary Mug, donation in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and a bag of Frank DeFrancesco’s home grown tomatoes. Meeting promptly adjourned at 8:30 AM with a reminder that next week speaker will be T.J. Barnes talking about “Transitions.”
