THIS WEEK'S MEETING
President Gary Green (sporting a fledgling half-beard to promote an upcoming golf event) called the meeting to order and asked Susan Davis to lead the pledge. Past President Melissa Blackburn delivered a short, touching invocation that focused on the victims of September 11, 2001, and included a prayer by Father Michael Judge, the Catholic priest who, while ministering to New York firefighters that terrible day, was himself killed by falling debris. Melissa’s moving invocation was followed by Linda Jalving’s leadership of the group in singing “It’s a Grand Old Flag”.
Pete McGuire introduced the usual contingent of guests from Club 33 and other guests, including speaker Walter Heiburg and Rotaract members.
Announcements
Ø President Gary reminded “Red Badgers” the Rotary Foundation Seminar will take place at the Salk Institute on September 14, 2002, from 7:30 am to 12:00 noon. This is an opportunity to learn about Foundation activities and is open to all members.
Ø President Gary also solicited club contacts who might be able to furnish a club banner, to be used at the upcoming Rotary District meeting in October (which will be hosted by our club) and many other events. Prospective New Member Duane Horning volunteered to secure one.
Ø There will be a club social event on October 3, 2002, at the Old Town Playhouse. The featured play is “Beehive-a 60's Musical”. Members were urged to sign up for the event at the meeting because tickets needed to be purchased immediately.
Ø Jennifer Cusick announced a project to donate 1000 wheelchairs; club members donating funds will have their gifts matched by the Rotary Foundation. The club’s response to Jennifer’s appeal was overwhelming. Here are the members who stepped up:
1. SD Breakfast Rotary Club - 13 wheelchairs

3. Melissa Blackburn - 1 chair
4. Don Lang - 1 chair

This week’s fines
Ø Sergeant-at-Arms Lou Scanlon congratulated Mike Lewis and Susan Millard Davis for recent wedding anniversaries. Tom Sayer and Mike Lewis offered bragging bucks-Tom mentioned his son’s recent goal in a soccer match and Mike trumpeted his 125 lb. halibut, caught during a recent trip to Alaska.
This week’s speaker
Today’s speaker was Walter Heiberg (pictured
here with Laura Wilson), representing the McMillin Companies, developer of the
Naval Training Center Redevelopment project. Walter explained the large scope of the project, which
covers 365 acres, and McMillin’s efforts to comply with requirements imposed by
the City of San Diego, environmental concerns and numerous other
restrictions. The project will
consist of an 80/20 split between public and public development, with the
majority of the project devoted to public space. It will include different neighborhoods, encompassing Navy
housing and three different types of private McMillin-constructed housing. The Historic District will preserve the
historic aspects of the base, including buildings and open space. There is also an educational component,
where High Tech High will be located.
The Mixed Use District will include commercial and retail space. A non-profit entity (the NTC
Foundation) has been established to promote the development of an arts and
cultural center. There are also
plans for hotel sites and parkland.
The redevelopment effort is extremely complex and must satisfy many different constituencies. Thanks to Walter Heiburg for an interesting presentation on an important community project.
