THIS WEEK'S MEETING
President Gary Green (wearing a very patriotic hat) called the meeting to order with the words, “This is a significant day in all of our lives. Following our president’s touching words regarding the 9/11 tragedy that happened one year ago, the Rotarians and guests sang a beautiful rendition of, “America the Beautiful,” led by Linda Jalving. Dave Ferguson, a Vietnam Veteran, delivered a beautiful invocation, “In Memory of 9/11,” which at the end he tolled a bell as we shared a personal moment of silence to pray for each person, in their memory. President Gary Green offered a prize (a California Chardonnay) for the most patriotically dressed person. Even though it was close, with all of the women in red, white, and blue vying for the prize, T.J. Barnes, our speaker, was the ultimate winner. Jim Mulvaney came in a close second with a very American tie.
Pete McGuire noted that for the first time, to his knowledge, there were no visiting Rotarians at our club, but there were plenty of welcome guests.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ø President Gary Green announced that next week the speaker will be Marilyn Joy Sheppard, who was a survivor of the Twin Tower disaster last September 11th.
Ø President Gary Green reminded us that this Saturday morning, September 14, 2002, from 7:30 – 12:00 the District 5340 Foundation Seminar would be held at the Salk Institute.
Ø Duane Horning, Esq., was acknowledged and thanked as the banner he designed to represent our Club was passed around the club. “Great job!”
Ø President Gary Green reminded everyone that our Club is hosting the District Council meeting on October 8th, at 5:30 – 8:00. Our Club is to provide 10 – 15 members as the host club committee to set up and staff the check-in area and to provide “entertainment. Looking around the room there seemed to be not a lot of “musical talent” to choose from, but luckily we have Linda Jalving who agreed to look into providing music for the meeting.
Ø Tickets are going fast for the October social function, “Beehive” in Old Town. The date of the event is October 3, 2002, at 8:00 p.m. at the Old Town Theater. Contact Gary Green if you are interested – there are only a few tickets left.
Ø President Gary Green relayed the information that Rotarians in our Club provided 31 wheelchairs for the project headed up by Jennifer Cusick to donate 1,000 wheelchairs to Malawi which will be matched by the Rotary Foundation.
Ø LITERACY VOLUNTEER- Reach out to the children of Downtown and become a volunteer tutor for Kids At Heart. Help a school age child with homework and basic learning skills one hour a week. Your positive role modeling and mentoring can make a difference in the life of a child. Currently we are opening a new tutoring site at First Lutheran (3rd and Ash) on Wed. nights from 6:30 to 7:30 and need to recruit more tutors. We will be serving the homeless children from the Cortez Hill Shelter on 11th and Broadway. As always, we have other days and times available for volunteers. If you are interested in helping out please contact Susanne Choy or Jose Herrera at UPLIFT 619-234-4504 or upliftsc@earthlink.net.
THIS WEEK’S FINES
Sergeant-at-Arms substitute Frank DeFrancesco had no fines to give out, but did have an amazing selection of fruits and vegetables to sell. The raspberries were particularly delicious. It’s the end of the summer crop and now is the time to buy your DeFrancesco produce.
THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER
Today’s speaker was T.J. Barnes, a Transitional Life Coach and Motivational Speaker, who talked to the Rotarians on, “Transitions.” Today is a particularly significant day to reflect on who we are and who we want to be, and T.J. gave us some tips and advice on “unveiling” the masks that we put on. She pointed out the significance of words and what we do with them. The ultimate question was asked, “What can we do with the gifts we have been given?” Finally, we were left with the PPRA guideline – Powerful Plucky Right Attitude – to help us live our lives more fully.
